    Just wondering is there a legal period that you must give.

    I have been in a job for 3 years, what is the legal notice i must give?

    Usually it is dictated in your contract of employment, if not it would probably be tied to your frequency of salary payment.

    It does say in my contract that i must give 1 month BUT on a charter on the notice board its has listed that i only have to give two weeks. The charter is not written by my company it looks like some company law poster

    That I can't comment on I'm afraid, but personally, I would go with the month as that is what is in your contract.
    Of course,depending on the company and line of work you may be turfed out on your ear to enjoy some gardening leave and what not...

    My contract states 3 months notice, but if I ever resigned, I'll be asked to leave once all my work is passed to another person to deal with (probably the same day) and paid for the remainder of the notice period!

    In my last job the contract specified one month, but the day I resigned I was requested to immediately vacate the building :D OP, I'd go with what's in your contract rather than something you saw on a message board. If your position is sensitive enough you may be terminated straight away.
