Hello, I bought a lenovo u450 running windows 7 32bit a few weeks ago. Everything was running fine until tonight when out of nowhere, the computer shut down. I was on facebook on firefox at the time and using itunes. When I tried to restart it, it would get to the log on screen, the log in, the a blue screen of death would come on.

Ive been trying to fix it for the past 2 hours but no luck. Ive got into the desktop the odd time, only for it to blue screen after a few minutes, or just randomly shut down, like the screen would go blank, then the lenovo log on screen would come up. Ive got in a few times to the desktop and done a system restore to a few days ago, but no luck.

Its not a virus as im experienced in laptops, and was using security essentials, plus I dont visit or download dodgy sites or stuff. Anyone have any clue as to what is wrong? I havnt dropped it or anything like that either, and the "lenovo one key recovery" doesnt seem to work now either, it says please reinstall software. The laptop doesnt have a disk drive as its basically a netbook.

did you have AVG installed as there is an issue with one of the updates. Not 100% sure its the same as yours but sounds similar

From a distance its hard to tell what the problem could be. For example it could be a hard drive failure.

Do you have any important files on the computer? There are ways to retrieve the information from a live OS on a usb key*. You would need access to another computer to set that up.

Since the laptop is new your best bet is probably to bring it back the the seller and get it fixed/replaced.

*This means that you run the OS from the usb key and it doesn't change anything on the hard drive. It is also good way to find out if it is a hardware or software issue.

I think it could be a hard drive failure also, but I have no clue as to how that happened, as I didnt drop it, or damage it or anything in the slightest. I had alot of college work on it and valuable pictures, music etc. Can you give me any more info on the Live OS recovery as I have a desktop here also.

Is there anyway to restore it to factory settings even though the recovery key doesnt seem to be working?
    cheers

I heard a statistic that 13% of all new hard drives fail in the first year, so it may just be that.

To create a live OS go to www.ubuntu.com and download from the main link on the home page.

Then go to http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ and download the version for windows.

For this you will need a usb key bigger then 700MB, preferably with nothing else on it. Launch unetbootin and browse to the ubuntu file. Then at the bottom where it asks for type, select usb and from my computer confirm the drive letter for the usb key you intend to use and click ok.

(Leave the options at the top since you have already d/l the file)

Now here is the tricky bit, you will have to change the BIOS to boot from the usb key or press a button to choose which media to boot from. This can change from one manufacturer to another. Typically it is the delete, F2 or esc buttons for the BIOS. Or F12 for the choose boot options. A google search of your model laptop should give the answer.

Once you have booted into ubuntu then choose the option that doesn't change your hard drive. When you get to the desktop the icon are now at the top of the menu bar. Go to the middle one called places and from the drop down menu select 320GB Filesystem, (Or whatever size your hard drive is)

Now you are looking at the windows filesystem, select users, your user name and then you will see, my documents, pictures etc. You can back up your files onto the same usb key with the live OS if there is enough space, or to a second one. They will also be listed in the places menu.

As a back up I recommend you use dropbox which gives you 2GB free and will sync your files to your desktop and the cloud for web access. If you have found this advice useful please use my referral code.

Have you taken note of the error code before. If the number changes it tends to be a software issue, if the number is the same it tends to be a hardware issue.

If the problem does happen to be a hardware issue such as bad ram as happened in the article, it is better to return the laptop as faulty. If you open the laptop case you will break the tamper seals and void the warranty.

Last known configuration tends to be a one chance option. After two or more reboots this is no longer a valid option.

After the system restore I presume you had to reinstall the updates from windows. If so did the problem seem to happen after that, which may point to a software issue.

With any computer problem, the priority should always be data recovery.

When you did the system was restored did the problem return after system updates were installed. I'm trying to determine if an update is causing the issue.

It did the system restore, then went restarted, but then when I went to log in, it blue screened again, I didnt actually get to install any updates or anything if you get what I mean.

Yes I know what you mean. So for the system restore you pressed a function key like F10 and the OS was reinstalled?

If so this should have restored in back to the factory settings, hopefully without overwriting your files.

No I was able to log in one time about an hour ago like normal and do a system restore to a few days ago, I thought it was fixed then, but it restarted and blue screened on the log in. I cant seem to do the restore factory restore settings as the lenovo one key system restore button doesnt seem to do anything for me like before.

Feck this noise, it's 2 weeks old, take her back. It's got to be a hardware issue going on what's been said in this thread.

Ah, you used the windows 7 system restore to go back to a previous state. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Ok, First of if you restore to factory settings it probably will over write your files, so a back up is VERY important.

Are these your only copy of the files. If so BACK UP NOW. Did you understand the instructions to use a live OS?

And trust the tech on the other end to retrieve all your files?
