Dangerous driving conditions

Just back fro trip to Tescos on Ennis rd.
Main roads fine but very dense fog in places.
Off main (gritted ) roads minor roads are deadly.
Roads look deceptivley Ok but when I braked to check for ice I skidded for about 50 metres.

Eventhough thick fog in places huge amount of people driving with lights off. This is something I have great difficulty understanding. You need to corner slowly at junctions from grited road to icy road so if you do not see cars coming you risk an accident.

Why don't people put their lights on.

Driving last night on deliveries and it is crazy the amount of folk with just their sidelights on in the fog, some didn't even switch on their lights!! Thats the truth. word to everyone, be careful the roads are deceptively treacherous.

Is it that bad out?Fog looks bad alrite, the gf is gone for a jog so will see what she says when she comes back.

The fog is not soo bad now. I drove last night at 9pm and again at 2am and this morning into town at 11:30am.

Barely needed my lights on for the fog. The ice in my estate in crazy. I nearly crashed numerous times. The main roads are ok, even the road from Newport into the city.

People are still driving WAY to slow for the conditions. I say this every year

"Just because it is icy in your driveway/estate does not mean that it is icy on the N7[Insert applicable road here]. A guy was doing 30kph, I sh*t you not, from Finnegans to the NTP roundabout where he used the incorrect lane for going straight on so I got passed him. :D No ice, roads were nearly dry at this stage.

+1 to this - people are actually braindead on the roads.

Got stuck behind four cars last night doing 20kph out the old Dublin Road from newport roundabout to Dalys cross, passed the four of them just beyond herberts. All of them flashing their brights at me as if I was crazy.

Fr. Russell Rd. wasn't great at all at 0900 on my way down it towards the Dock Rd., don't know about the rest. I just took it handy and kept the gears high and it was alright.

Surely you put your lights on in fog so that people can see you, not so that you can see better.
I do agree however about people driving too slowly. Was crawling behind a woman in a 09 Range Rover doing about 15kph along the North circular road. Surely a Land Rover has 4x4, traction control and all that. I overtook her at a speed bump where she virtually stopped.

You only need fog lights for distances of less than 50m forward vision. I could see easily at least 2.5km so I didn't need any lights. I drive with my dipped beams on all the time anyway.

    Habit from years of driving.

True , but better to be going slow rather than acting like a harebrained idiot and causing an accident.

I cant agree with you here, in particular in poor conditions, people should drive at a speed that they are comfortable with not at a speed that someone else wants them to drive at. Better arrive a few minutes late then not at all.

You don't happen to drive a Nissan Micra do you?

I was driving my taxi last night and clocked up 400 miles from 6pm-4am. +1 on people driving too slow after coming out of treacherous housing estates and car parks it's extremely infuriating. Anytime I saw a car gaining on me in my rearview(usually a 4x4) I'd indicate left, gently touch the brakes and they'd usually pass me out...common courtesy an'all.

Anyway, SAFE driving to those who have to be out on the roads.

No but they can keep going at less than 30Km/H ;)

The footpath were somewhat better this evening to run on compared to yesterday. Still some icy patches in places.

Decided best to run around the back fields of the running track.

Safety has to be the top priority. I also find some drivers go too slow, but hey, they could be old , or inexperienced etc, we need just a little more patience.

Just back from Tipperary - N24 is fine ice-wise but the fog is something else. Less than 30 m visibility in a lot of places.

In fairness, the roads are better than the footpaths

LIMERICK MOTORISTS ASKED TO SLOW DOWN AFTER FOUR CAR PILE UP

    06 December 2010
Limerick Motorists are being asked to leave early and take care on the roads as they return to work after the weekend.

A four car collision involving a lorry has blocked the M7 Motorway on the Northbound lane heading towards Dublin this morning.
Six units of Limerick's fire service and Gardaí attended the scene of the crash at the Birdhill turn-off shortly after 7.30am.

Motorists are being asked to avoid the area at all costs and take alternative routes as there are still dangerous road conditions in the area.
There are no reports of injuries.

Also, Wolfe Tone Street and Newenham Street in the City, The Father Russel Road, the Ballina to Herbertstown Road, the Ardnacrusha to Clonlara Road, all local roads in Askeaton and Newcastlewest, The Shanagolden to Foynes Road and the N69, N20 and N21 are reported to be particularly bad this morning.
