I was boarding a plane yesterday, amidst all this snow and disrupted travel timemes. The flight was delayed and a "window of opportunity" was made available and hey presto, we were going to get away. We boarded the plane and the pilot along with the air hostesses were ushering people on board...it was a case of get to your seats as soon as possible because we needed to be air bound in order to land in Dublin Airport before a certain time because the airport was going to be closed once again. The flight was from Birmingham to Dublin. Great, so we boarded, and people were hurrying to their seats, however, I was behind this couple who were feck acting around, as in, she was putting stuff into her bag and then taking it out and at the same time he was leaving his coat on and taking it off....the air hostess was still announcing, "Please get to your seats, we need to be air bound in 20 mins in order to land". I lost the cool and asked these people, I asked " please sit in your seats and you can sort yourselves afterwards". As expected, they looked at me as if I had six heads, but eventually sat down. The air hostess was way back as these two were holding up the queue. Eventually, we got airborne and were the last flight to land in Dublin before the airport was closed. I relayed this story to a friend of mine (mind you a failed solicitor and thick ignorant at the best of time) and he curtly reminded me that I was totally wrong as it wasn't my job to "interfere". Probably not, but why people don't listen to announcements when they are important, beats me. Just a rant and wondering was I wrong?

Considering it would have been an overnight stay if that opportunity was missed, I'd say you acted quite calmly. Inconsiderate assholes like that really piss me off.

You were already on the plane, these people standing up wasn't going to delay it any longer.

You acted like a bit of a prick tbh.

You were right, people need to cop the **** on about things like that.

Before the plane can depart from the terminal all passengers must be seated and have their belts on by law? With these idiots standing up blocking the aisle over such minuscule matters I'd say what he did was fine. 20 minutes sounds like a long time but in that 20 minutes they have to get everyone on, seated, taxi to runway and finally take off.

Considering what the conditions were like at the time that's a very small timeslot.

Leave it to the cabin crew.
If the senior CC was given a hurry up by the captain he/she'd be onto it like a shot.
BHX DUB is a short flight. If there was a chance of DUB being closed they wouldn't have gone.

Yes it was going to delay, as seemingly, you have to be seated and belted up before the plane takes off. Prickess, actually!

Thank you. I am a very restrained person, but after spending a night in the ariport, I was damned if a cromby coated idiot and his female partner/wife foostering around were going to delay me any longer.

Well, I think that since you didn't cause an incident (y'know, with cops shutting down the plane because of a bit of shouting) You gave it the appropriate response.

    Good call OP

I actually felt sorry for the Air Hostess, as she was trying to deal with this situation about 20 people behind me. And of course, Yes it is her JOB, but this was a case of "these people were just thinking about THEMSELVES"....nothing new in that as sometimes PEOPLE JUST DON'T CARE and then if we were delayed they would be the very first to give out to the AIRLINE staff!

Thank You. Sometimes you doubt yourself, as really and truly, I would NEVER interfere in such a situation. But my "friend" was so adamant that I should not have interfered but I think I did the right thing!

I am a great believer in paragraphs, but the story began and ended in the one paragraph...which is actually allowed!

Good for you. Less tolerance for people delaying others simply to suit themselves is what we need.

under the circumstances OP i think you were very restrained

people like this at airports reaaaaaaaaaaaaaally annoy me

you notice them first in the security queue, where they stand idly, seemingly oblivious to the signs and announcements about taking off belts/coats/shoes, removing mobile phones from pockets etc.

of course, they never have their boarding pass ready when they get to the security person either, there's inevitably a big search for it in coat pockets/handbags/case etc.

then they have to take off the coats/belts/shoes, despite everyone else around them having done this earlier.

next they usually have liquids in their hand luggage, or something else that warrants investigation and causes delays.

they're usually the muppets that queue in the priority queue for ryanair flights, depsite not having paid for it, so there is more hassle and delay when they get to the desk

when they finally get on the bloody plane then they faff around folding coats, taking out books and generally causing disruption while a big queue forms behind them

people like that should not be allowed in airports!

The sad fact is, if there had to be an emergency evacuation of the plane these same passengers would still be faffing about. Studies into air accidents have shown that your survivability of an aircraft accident is heavily dependent on the speed, quick thinking and agility of your fellow passengers. From the sound of Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb - they would sc^ew up the whole evacuation plan and lives would probably be lost as a result. I can understand your frustration.

you just said what a lot of us have wanted to say
i throw my case into the locker and usually have what i need to hand to keep the delay to a minimum and if i do need to do something i wait till everybody has passed
i know we can't all be like George Clooney's character from Up in the air as regards airport efficiency but some people just take the biscuit

Think I might be related to that couple by the sound of the foostering you describe - would drive the most patient individual nuts :eek::eek:

Well done, OP! You acted in a cool, calm manner and got results.
You were already on the plane, these people standing up wasn't going to delay it any longer.

You acted like a bit of a prick tbh.

So what do you think he should have done? Would you have liked if you were a passenger on this flight, it missed it's slot and you ended up spending the night back at Birmingham airport - just because of a couple of inconsiderate idiots?

OP i'd have probably started to chant in arabic whilst trying to set my crotch on fire, that would have made them get a wriggle on! Silly old feckers
