J1 work

Hey planning on going on a J1 next summer but I'm worried of not getting a job when I go over. I don't have a lot of experience in work, only 6 months in a newsagent and 3 months in a warehouse. I don't think it is enough to get me a job in America :(

Try not to worry about this, a lot of people going over will have less experience than you. What will put you ahead is if you're prepared and you act like you actually want a job. In my experience, when you're looking for seasonal work the employers aren't overly fussed with cvs (resumés in US).

If you're going from place to place and they tell you to come back another time (manager isn't there, etc.) or they take your number and say they may be hiring you have to follow up. The only reason I got a job in the US was because I was persistent. I went to the shop where I ended up working 3 times before they hired me.

From an Irish perspective, that sounds quite aggressive. But seasonal work is hard to come by so you have to make yourself stand out. Be prepared to "sell yourself" and talk about yourself.

Finally, try places that the other irish aren't trying. An example of that would be in San Diego, people tend to flock to Seaworld. I went to the State Park and got hired.

    Best of Luck!
