Not sure where you got your prices from. Insignia starts at 27,400, depending on model and engine.

I've been driving an Insignia SRi, 160bhp CDTi since March 2009. Have to say, I absolutely love the car. Great to drive, comfortable, good engine, plenty of power and a nice looking car.

they were the prices give or take. all were a base model. they were all the smallest diesel engine in them. they all included the delivery charges and metalic paint. these prices were got around feb 10

I had one for 4 days / 300 miles last last month. Loads of interior space, there was four of us (adults in it with a good bit of luggage). Very, very good handling for a big bus, 17" alloys on it they looked a bit lost under the arches though. Couldn't fault the interior really. Plenty of poke, dunno what exact model it was CDTi anyway. Personally, I think it's a rotten looking car, no way near as bad as an Octavia but still rotten.

Button handbrake is an awful thing too me thinks.

CDTi comes in 130 and 160bhp models.

Button handbrake is only on some models. Thankfully it's not on the model I have.

Just got one recently (160 hp diesel saloon) after driving a petrol Passat for 3 years.

    for -
more comfy seats and suspension, better stereo, more power, less fuel.
quieter on motorway cruising. Electric parking brake like a miniature lever, better position than Passat. Automatic lights.

    equal -
boot space, legroom. (slightly less headroom in back)

    against -
gearbox not nearly as good as Passat (which was nicest gearbox I have used in 30 years driving)
minor controls such as indicators aren't as good.
brake pedal spongy (garage says its normal).

I haven't really got used to the diesel yet, especially turbo lag, so I couldn't comment on handling yet.

NB rear view from hatchback version is very restricted (test drive).

    Any specific questions?

It was my favourite car in that sector, and I still believe it's great value for money (big discount's available off the retail price), but since the introduction of the ecoFLEX engine tweaks, the engine feels a bit dead.

SRi doesn't have the ecoFLEX so might be the one to go for, but it does mean €302 tax (€156 on other models), but probably won't have a big effect on resale value.

All models since late 09 have the electronic handbrake now. I like it and it means you can use the armrest.

Headroom in the rear isn't great. It will be OK for kids, but a bit cramped if you have adults in the back. Rear view out of all models is a bit restricted due to the shape.

Sports Tourer is a lovely looking car, although the hatch and saloon are bad in my opinion. I'd be looking at SC with Plus pack as a minimum spec. SE as standard is pretty good, don't see many SRI's but the Elite is very good if it's within budget.

New Passat is now very competetive in that sector, and the new engines in the Mondeo (haven't tried any of them yet though) bring that back in to contention.

The saloon, too. Get parking sensors.

The sri model is a beast of a thing.

Gearbox in the Passat? It's fairly terrible. No feel, all light and fluffy, like all VW manual gearboxes - muck.
Doesn't take too far to travel in the Insignia either to realise that it's well ahead of the Passat in terms of handling too.
Insignia is really an excellent car, probably class leader in most respects, and I say this as a person who never liked anything Opel produced, except maybe the Manta 400!

I think they are lovely looking cars, very premium look about them imo.

Maybe I was just lucky with the two Passats (both 1.6 petrol) that I drove. The gearchange was light, smooth and accurate - like a precision instrument. By comparison, the Insignia's gearchange is somewhat agricultural.
And I forgot to say, that I think the Insignia looks better.

I have two passats. Tbh I cant say the gearbox is fantastic nor can I say its terrible. I drove an Insignia for 3 weeks. Couldnt fault the gearbox either. I was a bit disappointed with the display for the instruments and radio. It was that red display like the old Mazda 6. However if you got sat-nav this would replace the display.

I will say that it was a fantastic cruiser. A lot nicer than the Passat tbh. A bit expensive doh compared to the Passat. I would like the SRI with the bucket leather seats and all the toys..:)

I have a 2.0 Ecoflex Insignia SC model since last feb from new and a hunting rattling noise came from the engine 3 days after I bought it, it turned out to be a technical fault and a fix that was potentially not available until 21st Dec 2010, this has still not rectified the engine hunting and revometer fluctuations when the car is idling, Opel promised to replace my car for a new one in writing if the problem was not resolved by 31st Dec 2010.....they'll here from me and my solicitor this week....be careful....PS nice car comfy and lovely to drive , would be better if I had not been sold a car with a technical fault afterall I spent 31950....euro last feb

I drive the Insignia for the last few months. Doing alot of mileage in it and can't fault it. Handling is good, comfortable. as for the rearview window you get used to it and you have plenty of vision with it. Leather seats are the only way to go, heated too. I never drove a car with the electronic handbrake, was a little uneasy with it at first now I couldn't drive a car without it. It's a brilliant idea.
Can't fault the engine as there is alot of power in it, gearbox handling is okay. Cruise control is the way to drive also.

It seems like you've had some terrible luck there, I'm almost certain I saw the TUV report that the Insignia is the most reliable car in the category, not bad as I had heard that early 09 cars gave trouble, obviously they've well rectified that by now.

To the OP, I would still strongly recommend one, but don't discount the Mondeo or the Superb either.

Regarding Insignia problems. I have a fuel injection problem and have been told by a main dealer that it is a software problem. The might of GM are dragging their heels on this one, Waiting 10 - 12 weeks for software problem. Feel I am not getting the full story. Mine is 2010 160Ps diesel engine. I hear from dealer there are more Onsignia out there with this problem. Where are you with this problem at present ?

I agree they have a good look about them . I would not sat no to one of them but I always found Opel very uncomfortable

Have a 2011 Insignia SC 160 BHP Ecoflex since February, excellent machine, no issues at all, very comfortable, have the cruise control and wouldn't do without it now. Electric brake takes a little getting used to but it doesn't take long to get the hang of it.
Have driven it to Germany last April and 1 tank of diesel brought me from Galway to Dronten in Holland. Would recommend getting the plus pack if buying.
