Ok, not really sure the ins and outs of setting up a website.
I want to get a .ie website for my business. Whats the cheapet way of getting this I was quoted 17.45for a year on 'register365' this sounds very reasonable. ?
what does this involve? I plan to get someone to design the website in a few weeks, which i've being given a price of 99euro for a simple 4 page website which will sufffice at the minute.
Forgive my ignorance in this area but once I register my website, Then thats mine and mine only, yes? So then I can have someone edit/design that website as I wish? and what about google...whats determines if my website will show up in google over other competitors... 'hosting'?

    hi,

17.45 is actually a good price but maybe they will add on 21% vat.

    still a good price.
    what does this involve?
.ie registration cannot be completed without providing a signed letter outlining the applicants reasons for obtaining the name.

If it is a business or corporate name application you have to supply the relevant company number or business name number.

After providing this information, the information will be checked and you will either be accepted or rejected for a .ie name. Therefore there will be a small delay if you are buying a .ie.
Forgive my ignorance in this area but once I register my website, Then thats mine and mine only, yes?
Once registering your domain name this will be yours for what ever duration you bought it for and nobody else can purchase it.

So then I can have someone edit/design that website as I wish?
In order for a web designer to start designing your website you also have to purchase a space on the internet called: hosting.

and what about google...whats determines if my website will show up in google over other competitors..
Search Engine Optimization is a long process and requires skill. A website designed for 99 euro sounds extremely cheap to me.

You can be 99% sure this does not include any form of SEO or to help SEO in any way.

I hope you realise that if it sounds too good to be true, it is most of the time. Did you check the designers portfolio? You might just get a white page with text.

    Thanks very helpful Ubergeneration

Cost of hosting? apprx and best place to go? didnt hear it mentioned on 'register365.ie' not at that price anyway.

So basically ill get my .ie website, simple 4 page design for 17.45 + 99 + hosting ?

wow thats a lot better than i expected.

My website will be just for information not for potential customers and where to get us etc, so a simple website is all that is required.

Yeah it prob is a sign of the times. but just watch donedeal , people are advertisng to all sorts for half nothing as they migt have being layed off or for whatever reason. I'm sure to design a simple 4 page website would take minimum time and effort if you have being at it for years , im sure you could turn over quite a few each day? (saying that i know nothing about it) This guy i found on done deal a while back offered to design it and if i wasnt happy with it he'd scrap it and no charge... now maybe that does sound too good to be true??

I would be very wary of anyone offering to build a site for 100euro.
Especially if they advertised on donedeal!!

Also you may think you only need a 4 page site but you could be selling yourself extremely short. There is alot of marketing options open to you, twitter, facebook, linkedin. etc.

The days of simple 4 page sites are over. Customers want new and relevant information. A static site simply cant do this.

I can also guarantee that SEO will be none existent.

You will end up getting someone proper to rebuild your site which will cost you more in the longterm.

At €100 you will very likely get exactly what you pay for. You certainly will be extremely lucky if you get a site which performs well on the search engines.

You say the site will be used for for info and not potential customers. That doesn't tally with you stating that you need the site to outperform your competitors wrt search engines.

You are also seriously underestimating the time, skills, experience and effort that goes into making a website that performs. I'll give long odds that the designer you found on donedeal will do a bad job especially with the no foal no fee offer which sets off alarm bells.

Do yourself and your business a favour, take it seriously and do it properly with no skimping.

Is the 17.45 a special offer price?, you may want to check what the renewal fee will be when the domain is up for renewal

Details on the .ie domain registration policy can be found www.iedr.ie and www.iedomainnames.ie

I bought my .ie domain name for €15 at the start of the year, hosting was €60ish for the year, can't remember, and my website was free :) A friend of a friend was looking for something to do while he was unemployed so he spent months working on it for me bless him.

But yeah, my point is just that the domain name can actually be quite cheap.

That sounds very cheap for website design . The hosting is probably ex vat. I would look at other websites they have been designed to see if that is what you are looking for.

I would do it right the first time if i were you it will add benefit to your business in the long run.

Here is another example of website design for 99euro

    http://www.donedeal.ie/for-sale/businessopportunities/1658180

I'm aware this is probably the very minimum and bare website

    and hosting from 50euro...

    This is their website:

www[dot]ddwebsites[dot]com - have a look at the templates they offer. It's not good quality stuff at all.

Having a crappy cheap website might actually deter people; so it might be a false economy.

If you absolutely have to cut corners, at least have a look at sites like www.oswd.org and use a nicer template from there.

Edit: sorry, this is their website:
www[dot]budgetwebsitesinireland[dot]com - it's "delivered" by the site I linked to above. It's either the same operation, or they couldn't produce their own site - I don't know.

Yup proves that at €100 you get what you pay for.

Technically awful code using bad practices.
The way the javascript and style sheets are all exact same on all of their templates is telling of the lack of attention to detail.
    No SEO.
    Awful layout and colours.
Missing basics e.g at a glance hotels don't have location and direction page, contact info/form page with no room to put them in wrt navigation.

Nope, this is their website, or yet another one of them: www[dot]developersdirect[dot]ie - a non-site

It depends on your requirements for the site. If you are happy with it then go for it.

What you pay for your website should be based on the money it will make for you. You need to do a cost benefit analysis and then work out the Return On Investment of the site over time.

If you don't intend on using it to get customers then obviously the cheaper the better. However, if you want a marketing machine with a high conversion rate you should pay an amount that makes sense with regard to your return.

If you're buying an .ie domain name before Christmas then you will most likely buy it at a promotional price because the IE Domain Registry are currently running promotions to celebrate their 10th anniversary and many registrars are passing on this saving. You should talk to the company to make sure you get an equally good price on renewal.

On the webdesign front, a €100 template can be a great starting point if it's a nice design and you're happy to develop the site yourself, but if you need a website for your business then you'll really need to hire a professional and pay a bit more. Not necessarily thousands, but not €100.

It's best to chat with both the webdesign company and the hosting company before purchasing.

As I said, I'd be worried that a really shoddy site could cost you money if it turns people away.
