Was talking to John earlier on and we decided to head out for an hour tonight. Up the end of the valley again and saw a lamp shy bugger right at the start. Off he zoomed up the ridge and up the side of the mountain, goodbye, good night and good luck.

I brought along my Yukon ranger to test out the new 2x lens I got to replace the 5x lens. Only one problem, the inbuilt IR source - which is quite good in itself - wasn't designed for that magnification. So, it was like looking into a big black rectangle with a green circle in the middle of it :pac:

Not to worry, I'm going to fashion some sort of arm for the tripod, and mount a LF 170 with an IR filter on it. Going to be heavier than I'd intended but what can ya do!.... Unless I find something better....

After about 45 minutes of standing about in a freezing moderate wind we decided to leave. I think the icicles hanging off Johns nose done it for him :pac: Layers, plenty of layers!

Arriving back at the car I flashed the lamp down the valley and picked up an eye. Off we walked down the road and headed up and out onto the bog. Called for a minute and saw the eyes slowly move over a hill and farther down the valley - not interested.

But, on the face of the mountain I saw a bright reflection hurtling downwards, we're in business.

She had to come in quite a ways, went behind a hill and came out into a "boulder field". Sat down behind the rifle on a hillock I caught sight of our fox twice before she would disappear again behind another boulder. When she had a look out from behind the last boulder I could clearly see her head and neck.

Decided to take a neck shot, squeezed off a Federal and thwap! Over she went without protest.

A lovely vixen, about 130 yards. Photo doesn't do either of us justice :pac:

Got back to the car and checked the temp gauge I'd hung on the radio aerial. Not nearly as cold as it felt!

    Nice one John.

Seems fairly clear there or was that earlier. We have an ass load of snow here now were 2 hours ago it was clear.

I have the same temp gauge, but it only shows temp not wind chill effect. It reads -1 to -2 but when i checked the electronic temp it says -5 to -6 with wind. It bloody well feels it too.

On Sunday night we got some fairly light snow on the mountains, nothing below that, and none since! Yet, there was over an inch in the city yesterday morning :pac:

The car was parked up in the shelter out of the wind, I don't know if it'd record wind chill or not to tell the truth. It certainly felt colder than that

Even with my 571 layers on :D

21 so far, another 20 or so guaranteed at lambing, plus whatever turns up in the mean time.

Meant to go out at the greycrows, but I've too much to be doing in the day time and the days aren't exactly long.

Well, we are almost snowed in, I was out with the lamp tonight.

TBH it would work better on the .308 rather than the .223 as the rifle is awkward wnough without a lamp and powersource complicating this.

No Foxes to be seen, -2.6 here but ground Temps is -4.7

    I need a lamp man!!;)

Hey lads, what do ye do with your dead vermin? It ges without saying rabbits and even pigeons are taken home n eatn (mainly) but what do ye do with the crows, mags, foxes?

I wouldnt be keen on eating them but the same would be said about leaving them at the side of the road

A lot of the foxes that I shoot, like the one above, I leave at the shed belonging to the farmer - evidence that we're actually out and doing something instead of pub tales. Then they dispose of the out of the way. I imagine in this instance she'll be left in a ditch for the greycrows to polish off, won't take very long in this weather

I do much the same with the rare few I shoot on my own land. In Spring birds will also take the hair to line nests. When the weather is warmer between maggots and birds there really isn't much left to speak about.

The main thing is to keep them well out of sight and smell of other people using the land. Not had one complaint yet ;)

At some stage I'm going to try skinning them to keep the pelts and maybe skulls.
