How about making the starting date immediate so as to include the Aware 10k on 11 December and re-arranged Jingle Bells 5k on 18 December?

I had considered this, but prefer that times are done in 2011, for no better reason than its the start of a new year. However, anyone who hits a 5k or 10k time in one of these Dec 2010 races will probably find the stewards enquiry will fall in their favour ;) Can't vouch for the ensuing tribunal though.

In particular, a request from BeepBeep67 that the Goal Xmas mile be included in the challenge, makes sense. Anyone who can run a five minute mile while hungover and flatulent from too much Xmas pud, deserves to have the early start. I've heard these can be a bit congested though, but go for it, challenge is on! :)

Hypothetically, if someone was to try and run a 5 min mile at something like the Goal Christmas event, what would be a good session to checkout what kind of shape they might be in?

If for example, they had not been doing mile specific training but wanted to see what pace they might be able to hold, would something like a 4x400m at 1:15 pace be a good try-out a week or two before the target event? What would be an appropriate recovery interval?

Not that I am going to try a 5 min mile yet, but if I was ?!

if you were looking for an indicator session I would say that you would be able to judge better doing 6-8 at that pace with say 60-90 secs recovery. This is to compensate for the recovery compared to 4 consitent laps no break.

Personally not a big fan of "indicator" sessions myself though as they they take away from your training without serving much purpose. Best indicators are races

    Thanks, fixed now.

Think a plan might be to target a couple of the easier targets in Jan/Feb, while building towards a mid 2011 marathon. Then go for the 3k and 10 mile towards the end of the year.

Thought i might give this a bump to see how people are getting on with this regarding training and racing?

Will be lucky to get 1 down by the end of the summer. Will have my first race of the year in the Paddys day 5k, would take a 21:30 run in that at the moment. :(

1mile, 3km and 10mile are the ones I've left to tick off now.

15 seconds needed on the 1 mile from a couple of years ago and 4 minutes off the 10mile time, not sure that I've ever done a 3km.

You seem to be going well anyway. Whats the next target?

Had never done any speed training before, but since joining a club have now been doing various sessions with them, don't ask me what they are though as I haven't a clue. Basically I'm now interested to see if having now done 6 months with them I have actually improved on my times since last years times which were basically just based on my general lazy training regimen.

Have a half coming up at the end of March, although I think the course is a bit off road so not sure how good for a time it will be, if I can get close to the 1:23's that I did for Kildare and Dublin last year then I'll be happy. If I can get closer to 1:20 I'll be delighted. Have another couple of halfs scheduled for September time as well.

As far as the "Big 8" are concerned though I don't think I'll be doing a mile, but if a decent 10miler happens I'll have a bash at that. A lot of the races round here now seem to involve a few too many hills for any PB chasing. I've still to learn what the best races are to be doing for times yet round here.

That's some racing for January - how did you fit it in with all that skiing? ;)

I'm ignoring the bit about doing them all in one year. I reckon to have as many of them as possible done within 5 years of each other is a good enough target. :D

Mcmillan calculator would rate them in the following order, hardest first.

    10 miles in 59'59
    1 mile in 4'59
    3k in 9'59
    5 mile in 29'59
    marathon in 2'59'59
    1/2 marathon in 1'29'59
    10k in 39'59
    5k in 19'59

I'll knock the easiest on the head in Jan (5k) and then I'll spend the next few months working on 10k and 1/2 marathon. I can also see myself getting closer to a 5 minute mile than a sub 3hr marathon, got to about the equivelant of 5'30 last year.

I was wondering if many boardies have made much headway with the "Big 8" Challenge thus far this year?

Also was it ever decided what times we would use? The above perhaps?

BTW one would be doing extremely well to tick all 8 boxes in one year imo. Therefore I'm giving myself 2 ;) Although the 10 miler will prob remain out of my reach, in this life time at least

Stick 'em in the table (time's for each run I guess), maybe you'll get the ball rolling.:)

Only races count yeah? Like if you beat your HM PB on teh way to a Marathon PB its not counted as a HM PB?

I think it should count if you have an split provided by the race, but not if you're going by your Garmin.

If you run the HM time during a sub 3 M, thats two boxes ticked.

Races only count (or time trial on a standard track), to ensure accuracy.

The 10K and half times are both split times in longer races, but as long as I race the distance at some stage during the year, I'll improve them anyway.

No chance of me making the standard for the mile, 3k or 10 miles, though.

I wonder should the half be 85? for the reasons stated above, your never going to run 85 on the way to a 2'59 or at least you shouldn't

Don't re-start the discussion on the target times, please. We've had 10 pages of fruitless talk already earlier in the thread.

I think the only additional one I can now get is the marathon time if I'm lucky later in the year. Not going to be doing any of the other distances and the 10 mile is a bit out of reach at the moment.

Do intend to be knocking chunks off the various times I've got up there so far though. Did an almost 10km up and down hills in 40:50 last night and have a flat one, that is properly measured, to do this evening.
