Hi all just a quick question. I really like the lexus IS200 and i really want one for my next car. Only an 00/01 and i wouldnt pay mad money for it. The only thing thats off putting is everyone seems to say it ''guzzles'' ''drinks'' ''very thirsty'' with petrol. My driving instructor recommended one to me and when i pointed out the whole ''being thirsty on petrol'' to him he just said it depends on how you drive it. Are they really that bad? I won't mind putting a bit of money into it for petrol its the same with every car i suppose. Thanks for any advice.

Make sure you'll be able to get insurance on it first...

Got one almost 4 months ago and like yourself was a bit worried about the juice. But it's not as bad as I thought it would be. Haven't worked out the mpg but 40 euro would do me for the week. I'd do about 120-130 miles a week. If you go easy on the revs it can be economical enough. City driving is where I find it bad. Driving open country, it's fine.

Glad I bought it I have to say. They are a little underpowered but since my last car was a fiesta that hasn't bothered me! Most of the power is in the upper revs (> 4k rpm). Good fun in the snow and ice lately too with the RWD. :)

Best of luck if you decide to go for it.

Are you saying €40 gets you 120 miles? Or did I pick you up wrong? Cos that's dreadful tbh.

The simple unscientific test; what size is your tank, how much does it cost to brim it and how many miles will you squeeze on an open drive?

Off top my head that be about 20mpg?

20mpg is poor even for a IS200. I have an Altezza AS200, same engine as the IS, I get around 27mpg mixed driving. It all depends how you drive, doing mostly motorways you'll get over 30mpg but if you rev the tits out of it you'll be lucky to hit 25mpg. Don't let the fuel consumption put you off, their a lovely car to drive.

See this is the type of thing that makes me not worry and want one more. Overall i find the reviews of them to be mainly negative but i like them my only concern as i said was fuel consumption but i think i could manage that if i was driving a car i was truly happy with

Owned one for a year. They're not a cheap to run car. It is a heavyish 2litre 6 cylinder car after all. Not horrendous on petrol either. I was getting about 25mpg max mostly in the city. It really is about how you drive. Nice cars they are.

Its like this if you're currently driving a 1.4/1.5 petrol or 2litre diesel at the moment expect a definite increase in petrol station visits.

Sure is any 2000/20001 2 Litre petrol car going to be easy on juice? Don't think so.

Glad this got bumped. Finally got around to working out mpg this. 32 mpg with a mix of city and country driving in the last fortnight. I did act the bolox a few days trying to see how fast i could get her but with normal driving I reckon I could get 35. Not bad I think, obviously not economical though.

I get an average of 30MPG mixture of city and motorway driving.

Have had the car 3 years and not an ounce of trouble.

Comfortable, nice drive, though a little under-powered.

    Isn't the Altezza a 4 cylinder, while the IS200 is a 6 cylinder?

Altezza should have the Toyota 3SGE engine with BEAMS stuff, so yep 4 cylinder.

I managed to do 420 miles on around 55/60 litres of petrol so it aint that bad ;) In city with aggresive/sporty driving i managed to go as low as 15mpg with eco drivin it went to 30mpg ;) depends how heavy is your foot + plenty of other things

    Two types of altezzas:

    AS 200 - same engine as Lexus IS 200 - 156 brakes, 6cyl
RS 200 Yamaha Beams engine - around 210 brakes on japan petrol, around 170-180 on irish sh1tty petrol, 4 cyl

He said he had an Altezza AS200, which is the same as the euro spec IS200 - 2.0 6 cylinder.

The Altezza RS200 comes with the 4 cylinder 3S-GE.

Edit:shout have read the rest of the posts...:o

had one of these for a while, just after they where launched here....
in those days i had a heavey right foot, and **** me that thing drank the petrol, especially compared to the BMW 320i of same year, which i had directly after the is200.

much much prefer the is200 over the BMW, but they are thirsty........

If im correct (not sure doh) IS 200 engines are imported from mk1 supra ... ?! But they were twin turbo there ? hmm

There was a 2.0 engine available in the MK1 supra but it had no connection to the 2.0 in an IS200.

The US model IS300 uses the same non turbo 2jz engine as the MK3 supra.

Toyota engines with a 'T' in the engine code are turbocharged, not supercharged:P

Thanks for all the advice but despite the negativity of some opinions I'm still going to get one. Seen a few nice 00/01's for 3500/4000 and got quoted on insurance for 2000. I just love the look of them inside and out and can't wait to get one :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

    3500/4000 is too much

I've seen quite a few around the 2k mark and under in the last few weeks

I know this is being picky but I wouldn't want a silver one. For me when buying a car the colour is a big factor and with the IS200 all I like is black and blue so it limits my choices but I'd rather being driving a car I'm really happy with.

Thats exactly it, had a 2002 and sold it last week. 20 mpg even!
It made its own way to the pumps!!:(

They would be the best cars you could buy if they were diesel.

    That's about 19MPG. My 5l Porsche V8 doesn't even guzzle that much :)

I have 2 years full licence in May and no claims bonus. Should help it a bit.

    40eu - 180kms?

it might be not too bad, but moust people dont like the idea of underpowered engine drinking so much of fuel i guess.

    i get:

50eu - 180km/200km in mixed driving, now we are talking abot 2.5t engine.

lexus is such a lovely car thought, i really love the biuld quality and ride quality, but this engine is not the greatest.

OP. if you like lexus200, maybe try to get altezza which is not modded? altezzas engine is better then lexus one, more efficient, but if you dont do big millage, i would not care much about mpg.

That was off the top of my head at the time. I've been working it out properly since and am averaging 31mpg.

I thought I already posted that.

hi, i just bought a 04 lexus is200 2 days ago in naas and absolutely recommend it if your tinking of getting one. i test drove a4's,bmw's 316+318, accords, saabs 93 and really felt the lexus blew them outta the water. when test driving it and waiting at lights i thought it had conked out as running so quiet.

i also found the 93 a absolutley beautiful car to drive but the warning about reliability (03 model) put me off. i drove the equivalent mileage of up and down to dublin-cork city(motorway and urban driving) since ive owed it on 70e petrol and still have a nice bit of the gauge to run down since so i really dont think the car is that thirsty at all. maybe it becuase the alfa 147 wasnt economical either (my last car).

On the topic of lexus... could any1 recommend a lexus specialist in cork (not dealer) for repairs. would greatly appreciate it?
