not just emigration for people looking for work...
September,October and November are the 3 busiest months for people going travelling for the year, as a matter of fact i have rarely heard of people leaving any other time.
Lets hope they keep dropping though.

We're going to have this 'decrease' and 'stabilisation' propaganda rubbish next month as well. We need up to date employment numbers to know whats really going on.

There's also the seasonal effect of temporary Christmas work.

I'd imagine this could be greater than normal this year too as where in previous years some capacity to pick up the slack existed in the existing workforce, this year most workforces are already operating to close to full capacity already given redundancies, early retirements etc.

Those numbers mean next to nothing.

For example, I know of at least one person, that is back in college. He got a BTEA grant and off he went in September. He is no longer on the Live Register. Doesn't change the fact that he didn't work for over 9 months (to qualify for the grant) and nor is he working now. Nor does it change the fact that he's still job hunting and can't find anything.

I know of several people who have given up and left.

And others whose JSB has run out and don't qualify for JSA.

Realistically I would say our unemployment rate is far higher than 13% and, honestly, believing otherwise makes you quite naive. Naturally there are people who have gone back to work, and yes, the temporary Christmas employment will take some people back. But the fact remains that those figures are not a true indication of the number of unemployed people in this country - they just help the Gov stay in their happy little cloud land, where everything is getting better. What kind of a Government actually has emigration as an economic policy??:mad:

(Sorry I'm very angry about the whole situation right now, hence my ranting. But it is true)

Don't forget all the unemployed who were self-employed and can't claim?

Any chance social welfare scam artists are being taken off the dole too?
I feel emigration is the real factor, if it has actually dropped, seasonally adjusted...

Okay people, lets not forget that while emigration and the BTEA will have had an effect on these figures, there is also the likelihood that firms are actually employing more staff - or at least the casual and part time workers on the live register are being allocated more hours of employment. Based on anecdotal evidence alone, most people would agree that this is the case.

However this is a very minor shift in the statistics and while it is welcome, it's nothing to really raise your eyebrows at - medium term economic growth is still projected to have little or no impact on jobless figures.

Yeah, nobody uses that figure to measure unemployment - the CSO also uses another (Labour Force Survey) that uses a sample to estimate those unemployed. From the govt point of view they are only paying those that are registered.

figures are very misleading, doesnt account for migration, and doesnt allow for the seasonal adjustment
typical RTE pro-FF bias again, trying to make things look better than they really are

Afaik people who are working a 3 day week are also classed as getting JSB hence recorded as been on the live register,Dont worry people Martin Manseragh told vincent Brown this evening that Irelands unemployment rate wont hit the levels of the 80s these f**kers in the dail are deluded.

    They are seasonally-adjusted figures.

bend in the road, turning the corner :P

    in other news
The InsolvencyJournal.ie figures show that 1,392 companies have gone bust from January to the end of November, an increase of just over 11% on the same 11-month period in 2009. The number of insolvent companies in November totalled 142, an increase of 21 on the same month last year.

    Fair point.

    They are seasonally-adjusted figures.

We finally have the employment figures for the July-Sept period. They fell from 1.859m in Q2 to 1.851m in Q3. http://www.cso.ie/releasespublications/documents/labour_market/current/qnhs.pdf

So where did the 5,400 people who went off the Live Register in September disappear to? http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/finance/2010/0930/1224279987856.html (you know where they went)

The lies have also been peddled by the govt last year. The stabilisation in unemployment they claim does not translate to an increase in employment numbers. Roll on Q4 employment numbers to see whats going on for Oct & Nov & Dec.

    Rise in long-term unemployment.

Wonder how they will spin that?
