Home Automation!

I'm losing the run of myself totally looking at all the fancy things you can put into a house - but one thing I keep going back to is a home automation system - for audio and for video (sky+ and computer stuff).

I'm guessing it's a much easier install at the construction stage and I was wondering if anyone has it in their plans - or did it - are they delighted/disappointed with the result and did they need to win the lotto in order to pay for it? :p

Am I being ridiculous? Is this pie in the sky stuff?

Pie in the sky really depends on what you're budget is. Cabling should definitely be installed at the first fix stage to cover eventualities.

I would have suggested CAT5 back in the days I was doing installs, but that was about 6 years ago. I think the norm is CAT6 now.

    Check out the following

www.amx.com This would be higher end of the market
www.crestron.com. Possibly a bit cheaper than above

Both systems are quite diverse and in simple terms, if its electronic, the chances are that it can be automated....

    Thanks a million Fingers!!

Lots to read there, but the high maintenance part of me likes the look of the amx website best!

The problem I have with centralized video like sky is that the people I've talked to don't do HD over the Cat x cable. With practically all TV's going HD and latterly 3D then in order to enjoy that level of TV you'll still need a sky box at your TV.

The other thing in my head is to use Slingbox/AppleTV type of device to route the signal, they seem to be able to do full HD. Overall would work out much cheaper than the very expensive installations from some of the vendors. Not sure though that it will be as neat but something I'd consider strongly before splashing €10K on something that may end up redundant?

Like to hear anyone who has managed (either way) to centralize full HD TV and video..

Hey uptowngirly, so whatever happened with your Home Automation. Did you pick a system and get it installed or did you bother with it at all?
