QQ - I have an online pre-booked train ticket for a 3.30 train. Is there a problem using this on an earlier train on the same route ?

Yes there is a problem, you are supposed to get the ticket changed at the station and may have to pay a surcharge. The ticket you have is only valid on the 3.30 train so if used on an earlier train you technically will not have a ticket.
