I am a Sky customer and I seen an offer on their website. It involves upgrading my Sky box to A Sky Plus HD box for €30 installation. Only condition is you have to pay a HD sub for a year. I went to my local agent as Ive always found them more reliable than Sky itself. I was told they dont do this offer that I have to ring Sky direct. Is this the norm or is my agent just being choosy in what he does. Ive a feeling he makes more out of new customers than people like me. No big deal about it but Im just curious as to why he refused the business.

What if you phoned sky and said you were cancelling your subscription, bet they would listen then.

He makes a lot more money from new customers,Sky give him very little for upgrading existing customers so he reckoned it wasn't worth his while. It is €30 to upgrade to HD and no exceptions, although I heard of one installer trying to charge nearly €500 last week.
If he doesn't want business that's his fault, just ring Sky and tell them your experience-who knows, they might give you a good deal.I've heard of some people being offered HD for €5 pm when they upgrade.

There's a big difference between "business" and "making a profit". If it's a choice between sending a man out in a van for an hour and having Sky pay him €10 after 90 days - or saving the fuel, wear and tear and hassle - I think I'd choose the latter. Sky are notorious for making a huge profit on subscriptions and paying independent installers a pittance.

Yeah was rang about 3 weeks ago and offered 30 euro for box and install and then €5 a month for the HD - great deal so took it.

I know how much Sky pay for getting new customers and for getting upgrades by third parties-it really discourages the upgrade route as payments to installers/retailers are pitiful. That's what I meant by saying it wasn't worth his while to upgrade the op.

But what you don't is how shameful Sky's business's practices are, Especially when it comes to independent installers. They are notorious for issuing a deluge of work and withholding payments to Sky Agents for months on end, i personally know a fellow who took on Sky approved work and is out of pocket tens of thousands of pounds in withheld fees and bonuses.

We as a company had our fingers burnt taking on work direct from Sky with subsidised equipment deals and "Upfront" bonuses that never materialised. I knocked that sort of work on the head about 14 months ago. I have heard stories of trade folk who have devoted their businesses to Sky with promises of never ending work, they have ended up out of business with huge overheads and customer headaches. Also this nonsense of subsidised equipment deals, finding invoices with dodgy charges and the contact numbers that go no where. Its you the installer who is made to look like an absolute muppet in front of the client and i can fully see the installers reluctance to take on that sort of work.

How is he doing that as the small claims court doesn't deal with that kinda stuff?

I personally know of 2 people who got into financial difficulty due to Sky not paying out on time.Like any big company it's all about figures and screw the little guy.As I said, they don't make it worthwhile for guys to do the right thing so you see a huge amount of people getting signed up again as new customers due to the incentives from sky being better. You see that by the amount of folk posting suggestions to sign up under different names being posted on this forum.

Indeed, small claims will only deal with consumer to business, not business to business.

It doesn't make any sense. Why would you do tens of thousands pounds (not euro) without getting paid, then take it to small claims where the max claim is only 2k euro.

Actually I thought that too, but on checking...
From 11 January 2010, businesses can make claims against other businesses...The claim cannot exceed €2,000..

Interesting, thanks for pointing that out. Hopefully I'll never have need to use it.

as Samtheaerialman is talking in £'s and is near to Divis I think the UK small claims court applies where large sums can claimed.
