The timer in the boiler house of our oil fired central heating gave up the ghost a long time ago, I ran a wire into the house and put a light switch on the wall to manually switch the boiler on and off. It's been working fine for years, but I'd like to have a functioning timer. Sooo... the old timer was a mechanical APT one, the same as on the immersion, but I wonder could I use one of the cheap timers that fit a 3-pin socket since the boiler + pump ampage would be much less than that of the immersion? The APT timers are 40 bucks, and we have a few plug-in timers lying around. Thanks for any replies.

No reason why you can't use a plug in timer.
