    "SECOND REPUBLIC" to be founded
in the Gresham Hotel, Dublin (opposite the GPO)
    2:30PM, Saturday, December 4th, 2010

"Second Republic" is an invitation for like-minded people to come together in pursuit of political reform in Ireland. Since this invitation was first extended on the 18th of November, almost 200 people joined us and there have been over 6,000 hits on our web site from over 2,000 unique visitors. We come from all walks of life, all political parties, and none.

Our message is simple, we have one priority: we want to see established a National Convention that will re-examine the institutions of politics in Ireland (the Oireachtas, the President, the Government, the electoral system) and freshly revisit the entire constitution from the preamble down to very the last article.

This Convention will be organised according to three guiding principles. Reform will:

    - Be directed and "owned" by the people.
    - Be radical enough to give a sense of a new beginning and fresh start.
    - Address the failings of governance and institutions that underlie the current crisis.

As a practical requirement, this means that the Convention must be (a) independent of the Oireachtas, (b) involve both local "town hall"-style meetings as well as submissions from interest groups, and (c) be so thorough as to be deserving of the name a "Second Republic", whether in a literal or a metaphorical sense.

In this endeavour, our maxim is that we are about "questions, not answers". Only the People can give the answers. Our goal is to ensure the People have that opportunity. We want to inspire people to imagine a new Republic, not tell them what to think.*

In the coming election, we plan a "pledge" campaign seeking pledges from candidates running in the election. We will send a "pledge pack" inviting candidates and parties to sign up to the pledge of a National Convention that will accord to our three principles.

We are planning to meet in:

    The Gresham Hotel, Dublin
    Saturday, December 4th, at 2:30PM

    For more information see: www.2nd-republic.ie

    Or email: info@2nd-republic.ie

    * This does not, of course, preclude anyone associated with us from holding specific views on reform - but we, as a group, do not have any. We are absolutely non-aligned.
