No lights

I am wondering what is in heads of those who drive with no lights/side lamps only at night/dusk/dawn/fog/rain/snow, etc. What those people think, as I am optimistic enough to agree that they are capable of thinking. Is it a matter of being cool like "see, I don't give a sh*t cause I see everything and I don't care if others see me" or pure ignorance mixed 50/30/20 with dumbness and stupidity? If someone could enlighten me...

    The law.
I reckon Ireland has one of the least demanding laws about using lights in the whole EU.
In most cases people who don't use lights, do it legally.

I understand, but I am assuming that there is also no law that would ban sticking fingers to the mains, however people don't do it. Does someone really have to get killed/be send to the wheelchair so that one starts to think how dangerous it is? I am talking about adults, who in my understanding should have a little bit of imagination. At least enough to imagine that there are also other people on living on this planet.

Might be time for a mega merge on this one.

    :D

Have to agree though, even though its day light hours and you dont think you need lights to leed the way, they are damn useful in helping you been seen by other drivers. Especally with the amount of spray and slush being thrown up at the mo.

Some people just put absolutely zero thought into driving. I was out at around 4ish when it was starting to get dark, and was snowing. I counted more than 10 cars out with either no lights on or side lights.

Treat everyone you meet on the road as an idiot.
You will find that 95% of people you meet on irish roads are.

Excuse my blunt-ness but drivers in Ireland are f**kin r**arded!!!!

It takes a real idiot not to turn his/her lights on in the dark, rain, fog etc.

Driving on parking lights does my nut!

if I can see your car at the same time that I see your lights, what's the point?!!!!

like everything else that drivers are to blame for on Irish roads .....its a combination of ignorance or stupidity.

if the driver's error is pointed out - the response tells you if they are ignorant or stupid..... if they tell you to F*&k off ... its a simple case of plain ignorance...if they look bemused ....its obvious they had no idea they were breaking the law or doing something wrong - so they are just stupid drivers.

It's sad but true. As long as these drivers can see in front of them they think it's fine. I see it all the time. People driving around the city with no lights at dusk & even when dark because they can see perfectly well with all the street lighting.

I switch my lights on in rain, hail, snow & sunshine. As long as I'm moving they're on! It should be compulsory by now!

I've driven on the continent many times & they go nuts in Spain if your lights are on during the day. I've had pedestrians wave at me & point to tell me my lights are on.

It's down to education people :D

My gf gives out on this one - she says I'm a bad driver because I think I'm a great driver. I said that does not make bad driving, and I don't think I'm above everyone - I just treat everyone else as incompetent, when they pull stupid moves, I'm prepared and if they don't I'm pleasently surprised! :P

It's not as if it costs anything!

    well maybe the odd bulb....

Its the ones that do it by night that amaze me. How can you not notice that your dash is not lit up FFS?? It should be plain and obvious that you cant see what speed you're going at, how much fuel you have left, the engine temp gauge or even the radio controls.

Then again, I see plenty of people on dual carriageways driving with their door not fully shut either which you would surely be hearing a lot of wind noise from as you drive along but no .

    Dumbness and stupidity IMO!!

Another thing that drives me mad is f**kers behind you with full headlights on.

I do a lot of night driving and the amount of people with just the side lights on is crazy. Also have noticed a lot this year the amount of people with one light working. Is it the recession? can't spare the fiver to fit a new bulb?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,442 ✭✭✭ofcork

For some reason alot of 10 reg cars seem to be blowing bulbs, have seen alot with headlight/tail or fogs blown.

I'm sure some of them don't realise they have a blown bulb or their lights aren't on/working. The dash inside maybe lit up regardless.

I always check my lights every few weeks a quick walkaround the car hate seeing bulbs blown, anither thing that annoys is people who drive with foglights on along with normal headlights im sure alot dont even realise they have them on.

I try this, three times this morning in the space of about a half a mile in fact, but almost always they will brake as if I am warning them about something, then carry on their merry way.

One particular idiot really rubbed me up the wrong way. Bloke in a van, no lights, doing too fast on an icy road and on the phone. Unfortunately I didnt catch the company name on the van, but do these idiots not realise that they are driving a great big advertisment for their company, and their bad driving is just about the worst publicity they could get?

What is the problem with foglights on? I allways have mine on! 4 lights are better than 2 and 6 lights are even better at this time of year

if in daylight under perfect road conditions (as you said people who drive with no lights on other than required)

you cannot see a big metal object approaching you then perhaps it's poor observation on your part if you need someone to have lights shining at you. can you see the pedestrians in day light or do you want them to wear helmets with a beacon attached?

I use my lights as required and sensibly. in crap weather like at the moment. in poor visibility or in low light eg morning and evenings as required.

not attacking op just making general statement by the way

There was a red Octavia on the M1 today yesterday to my right, no lights on, doubt the person ahead could see them in their rear view. I beeped and mouthed "your lights are off* and made twisting motion on my own light switch on the stalk. He just looks at me and then gave me the finger. Prick. I cursed him the whole way to Costa where I enjoyed a delicious Caramel Latté.

We weren't gettin' over 20kmh btw in case anyone decides to jump on a high one. :pac:

I think it should be a serious offense to be caught driving without lights when it's dark or the conditions are poor. I mean like 5 years off the road type of deal. These people are a danger to themselves and (more importantly) everyone else.

I think so too... but doubt it'll happen until some respected member of Garda Siochana or politician looses both legs in a car accident caused by such moron. Time and the weather are the allies here.

Here is a mad idea
How about we dont have an off switch for the lights like in some cars (volvo) and lots of motorcycles, Drive with your lights on all the time :)

...changed a few years ago: no light switches anymore !

I have my car lights on all the time, btw, probably because of my 'bike experience.
