RTE networks has informed me that my local transposer won't be upgraded to recieve saorview in which case I believe I will be getting yet another dish on my gable, ( 1 freesat,1broadband and now one saorview[i live in the sticks and nobody wants to spend money on infrastructure out here]).My question is...

I am buying a new Tv so do I still need one with a mpeg4 tuner if I am to be getting saorview via satellite?

    Hope this makes sense.

Which transmitter is it? (interested to know where they're definitely not upgrading)
What's the closest main transmitter, have you tried picking up Saorview broadcasts from it?

Saorview = Irish DTT via an aerial (MPEG 4 tuner required) ; Saorsat = Irish Digital Satellite (same channels as DTT) via a dish but totally separate operating system (no MPEG4 tuner required).
Hope this makes it clear what is required for each system.

And some places where the analogue never worked will get digital, sometimes accidentally . You don't live in Leenane which will get nothing at all do you?

Living on the Beara Penisula ,south Kerry, signal comes from Mullaghanish but through transposer at Lauragh. Looks like saorsat for me then because analogue signal straight from Mullaghanish was terrible.

South coast should be OK for saorsat. I think there will be a caherciveen tranmitter at some stage. Did you ever get TV3 or TG4 from Mullaghanish ...before or after the wind farms went in north of you ??

Coulld the new taller Mullaghanish mast when it goes full power (DTT 200kW) in 2012 provide coverage in the area?

    Very true Cush,

However if he is in the valleys south of Lauragh then he could be in a spot of bother if tucked under the north face of the Healy pass facing Lauragh to the north. No saorsat either for him.

These satellite shadow areas will need extra transmitters, eg Leenane with no DTT and a shaggin mountain in the way in the direction of the Saorsat bird.

never got tv3 from Mullaghanish, I get freesat ok so I presume I will be able to get saorsat.
Will they operate the installation of dishes etc for saorsat like the national broadband scheme where the installation is heavily subsidised?I don't see why we should have to bear all the costs as we pay the same T.V. licence as evrybody else.

Provided you have a clear line of sight to the satellite expected to carry the service at 9 deg. East. Freesat comes from 28 deg. East.

    Highly unlikely.

freesat ( uk) is south east but saorsat will be due south. You will have to buy a separate dish if it comes to it I am afraid.

However Lauragh and Mullagh would need a differend Band of UHF aerial, Mullagh is Group A for both TV3 and DTT where Lauragh is Group C/D.

Look for a nearby wideband ( not the H type) aerial pointing at Mullagh and talk to those neighbours about it.

The issue of Dish install subsidy for those deemed by RTE NL to get no signal is not decided yet.

The issue of Digital Setbox subsidy for some people is also not decided.

The Government was to commision a study.

Brief answer is no. But you should think of the future. Maybe you'll move, or perhaps you may want to sell or pass on the set when you next upgrade. Best to get a set with MPEG 4 decoder to cover all possibilities.

Unless the TV has a Satellite Tuner built in. Some do. Then it needs to be a DVB-S2 tuner with MPEG4

Any TV without DVB-T or DVB-T2, HD and MPEG4 is obsolete and probabily being "dumped" on the market here.

Also you never know when you might move house or a Fill in DTT TX added. Don't buy an obsolete TV.

Definitely no chance of picking up both services with a single dish, then?

Not on a bog standard Sky dish, however a toroidal dish in theory would allow for reception of 9E for Saorsat with a KA-Sat LNB and Astra 28E for Sky/Freesat via a normal universal LNB.

Another option would be for a Motorised system however I am not sure if there is dual type LNB's that can receive both the KA/Band and KU/Band which would be needed to incorporate Saorsat and Freesat into one dish, perhaps one could dual mount them side by side so for reception of both bands when the dish would move between them.

However and I cannot stress this enough Saorsat is miles away from the market yet and until Saorsat branded end user stuff becomes available I would buy nothing. If the Rocket were to explode upon liftoff (hopefully not! :() then the whole project is dead and would not be revived until 2012/13.

On a different note, I have a Panasonic Freesat TV which does Freesat and I wonder would there be someway to amalgamate the Saorsat and Freesat feeds into the single cable so as to allow reception of both services? The TV is not Disecq compatible afaik so was just wondering?

    Not on sky dish...

You don't need a Toroidal Dish. They are expensive and heavy, when you need 45 degree spread. A 80cm to 110cm* approx Triax solid dish with Triax bar. I'm getting all the Ku 28E, 19E, 13E and 9E on one Triax dish.

(*Dish size depends on location, which satellites are wanted and if it's a large distribution system)
