Here are some figures from Which? car showing their (not the manufacturer's) measurements of boot capacity in litres for estate models.

Which? measure boot capacity up to the window line, both with rear seats in place (the min value) and with them folded (the max value)

    bmw 5 series 560 min, ? min
ford mondeo 530 min, 950 max
skoda superb 475 min, 810 max
volkswagon passat 475 min, ? max
skoda octavia ? min, 925 max
toyota avensis 455 min, ? max
    volvo S/V60 440 min, ? max
honda accord 450 min, 685 max
volkswagon golf 435 min, 840 max
renault laguna 395 min, 740 max
    audi a4 375 min, 710 max
vauxhall insignia 365 min, 755 max

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

But where is the E-class? It typically has the biggest boot of all estates in the market, at more than 2,000l floor to ceiling behind the front seats

And where's the C5? The previous model estate had a very large boot too iirc

C5 is probably one of the best on the market right now in terms of load space. One of the guys I do work for bought a 2010 one ex demo, and I was seriously impressed with it, both in the load area, but the quality too. Despite the cheesy advertising campaign by Citroen, it does feel German, and the suspension in it was unreal. No problems with bumpy roads at all.

Unfortunately the measurements for those models are not provided :(

For many, an estate looks much better than a MPV so a MPV isn't an option. But to put that into perspective the Touran based on the Golf Chassis and thus shorter (AFAIK) than most of these.

    Touran Length, 4405 mm
    Passat Saloon: 4765 mm,
    Passat Estate: 4774 mm

    Touran Boot space (7s) 121 (5s) 695 (2s) 1,913 (litres)

Many other MPV's are bigger. I remember trying and failing to get a bulky piece of furniture into a A4 estate. But the same item fit easily into the back of a K11 2dr Micra. The usable access for loading is as important as the capacity. Just something to bear in mind when looking at estates.

Not an estate but this is what you can fit in a 9-3 :)
