Lamping 28/11/10

We went out lamping to try and get my first fox with the new gun. Saw a couple of foxes early on but they weren't playing ball. So we tried this small lane that takes you to the foot of the mountain; when we got to the top of the lane Ollie spotted a fox on the top of the mountain so we stopped to have a call.
I think at this point my exact quote was: "I wouldn't come that far for a free KFC" Ollie said we'll try calling him anyway. He broke out the trusted polystyrene and started calling, all of a sudden this fox came at full gallop and within 1 minute he was within range, I was busy relieving myself behind the jeep, as soon as I was finished (once you start...) I dispatched him from 65 yards. :D
He was a lovely big dog fox in perfect condition. We later ranged and he had come in from 400 yards, the shot couldn't be taken any earlier as he had to travel through a large gully before he got to us.

Aye, I mean pissin! Cold weather and my small bladder dont mix!

The gun is a Howa 1500 in .270, fairly new to me- I've shot one goat, 1 rabbit and one fox with it :)

Well done. You are mixing it up.
You could have made that shot at 400 with a .270.
Did the stock come with the paint job.

Good shooting, there couldn't have been much of the rabbit left after being hit with a .270

I only got the rifle a few weeks ago, since then I changed the scope, then the scope mounts and then added a muzzle-break. I'm slowly going to start stretching the range further out... I'd like to try something around 175, then maybe 250. In the freezing cold it's hard for me to do my part in shooting much past 250!!!

The rifle came with the mcmillen stock on it, I'm not sure if they're painted at all?

I took the rabbit at 140yards with a 6x scope, just removed both shoulders (I was a little bit high) but I still cooked it for the dogs. Rabbits are gettin scarce- I dont like wastin them!! :D

It's a VX-III 6.5-20x40. Not entirely sure i like it, but then I dont like variable scopes!

    Glensman,
Is this the 1500 that came with the scope package? The Nikko Stirling and rings?

Did you even bother to test out the scope or did you just go to the Leupold?

I just got the 1500 package and do not know if I will bother with the Nikko rings and scope or just get the usual Burris.

    Anyfeedback would be appreciated.

    Slan and congrats on Charlie.

I never went with the scope or mod package mate. I priced a new howa and it was coming in very reasonable ( although I was never considering a nikko).
The package I looked at was the stainless howa, with hogue stock and full ali-bed. Came in at £695 I think and an extra £150 for a pred 8 if you bought it all together.

I ended up going with the second hand howa you see in the pic, came with a mcmillen stock and leupold bases for £650, I believe the stock would have been around the same price.

I'm sure nikko are a grand scope, I used to have one on my .22mag and it was very good- thing is I got used to using schmidts and now I even find leupolds a bit inferior.

If you are going for a Howa I would go for the Hogue stock with the Full Ali-bed, apparently the standard stocks a very flexible...

    Glensman,
Wow - a Howa in 270 and an S&B? That's a tack driver that could easily reach out and touch Charlie at 400ya. Are you taking Charlie freehand or using sticks? Sit with some sticks and I bet you drop him at 400ya.

I recently got the 1500 in 223. The package deal came with the scope, rings, and a very nice soft gun case. I got a great deal on the package so the scope was pretty much at no cost and I can see why.

I am not sure whether I should even bother putting the Nikko on. Is it worth it to lap, clean, et al, and then just put another scope on?

Perhaps, I will take it to work with me tomorrow and test it in low light. If it's frosty and passes muster, then maybe I'll mount it on the Howa.

I am a Burris man myself. Would love to drop the dosh on an S&B but just cannot justify it to myself. Usually, I am the easiest one to convince on a purchase. :D The optics on Burris scopes is not S&B level, but it's good enough for my purposes.

Also, I cannot see your pics - they are showing up as moved or deleted by photoBucket...

    Anyhow, enjoy!

    Slan

Well I don't have the money for a Schmidt right now, I have 2 S&B 6x42's sittin on my other rifles, at the minute I've the leupold on the Howa, it's grand but I could do with mounting it a lot lower. Warne low mounts arent very low!

Hopefully by this time next year I'll have the funds available to buy a nice schmidt for the Howa as well, i'd like one of those old skool 10x42's- but they make a hell of a lot of money for their age and what they are!

@ John- yes, I was waiting all that time for my permit, applied Jan 6th and got it about 4 weeks ago ish.
