I know this is early but just been looking it up and if we win away at Birmingham(big ask) we will go ahead of the points total we had this time last year which in reality would be a pretty big milestone considering our bad start to the season.
I think we will have to play 4-4-2 with VDV out but I thought Defoe's touch was awful on Sunday he's obviously not back on form but it's a shame we have to throw him in the deep end.

Seb to come in for Kaboul(who has been great for us) and Defoe for VDV nothing else will change imo great that we have a week off hopefully now we can spend a day practising penalty's because we have been lucky so far this year we haven't lost any points due to them some tough games coming up though so three points would be epic.

Birmingham have a big derby against Villa in the Carling Cup QF on Wednesday night which should give us a slight advantage as they will be preoccupied with that match until Thursday.

I'd agree that Bassong and Defoe should be the only changes from the Liverpool game. Ideally I'd like to replace Palacios as well but I don't think Sandro is a better option at this stage. Hopefully Wilson comes good with a run of games in the team.

I'd love to see Wilson come back with a bang but he does seem to be the weak link lately.

I think this could be a tough game but given our run you'd hope maybe we could do them.

Well it's looking like we may have two form wingers for the first time in ages. Bale is obviously on form and will have had a good rest this week, and Lennon seems to be as effective as he's ever been, and nothing scares an opposing team more than pace on the wings, allied with good delivery.

If the two wingers can play well, and we get a good game out of Modric and either Defoe or Crouch, we should really be able to win this. It's also a good chance for Bassong to stamp his name on the first team and playing alongside Gallas, with his experience, should help. Having said that, I firmly believe his has some sort of draw written all over it :p

I'd just like to add that we need to stop conceeding the first goal. While it's great to come back and beat a team from behind, we won't be able to do it all the time and we need to start winning without having been behind at all.

^ very good point. It's good to be known as a team that can comeback but you certainly don't want to be relying on it.

Tough game but Birm are not as water tight defensively as they were last year. Hopefully we can try keep a clean sheet against a side that don't score many goals. here hoping anyway:D

    Weekend accum:

    Spurs away win.

2 keepers? Madness IMHO, surely some young fella could go on the bench and give him a bit of experience just being there like.

Happy days, keep it up Lads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,951 ✭✭✭SuprSi

Jaysus, if Crouch's first touch was better we could have 2 more goals. Brutal there when completely unmarked.

    Yeah it's working fine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,951 ✭✭✭SuprSi

Decent first half, Birmingham haven't tested Gomes at all, but we really should have put another one away. A little too much fancy stuff by Modric & Bale - keep it simple and just put the ball in the net. It'll be interesting to see how the 2nd half starts though because if McLeish puts another striker on it'll allow more room for Bale & Lennon.

Oh how I wish Crouchy had a striker's touch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,153 ✭✭✭everdead.ie

We are going to need to score soon after the restart to win this I think, their is a history of 90th minute goals in this game.

Good save Gomes, but he's so precious at times it pisses me off. You got a ball in the nuts, that's all. Get on with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,951 ✭✭✭SuprSi

Not a bad result, though we really should've scored a second in the 1st half. Very poor in the 2nd half, Bale was quiet enough, Defoe is still not sharp enough, and Crouch's touch was awful on at least 2 key occassions. Shame to drop two points but we've had 3 wins and a draw in the last 4 games so can't really complain.

yeah i thought we were in total control first half n let them back into it. poor second half performance but i would have taken a point there before the match.
very stange bench today. two keepers? hope some reporters ask harry about that.

Is it just me or did Lennon look like he just didn't want the ball at times?

i get that feeling off him a lot to be honest. he is starting to find a lillt bit of form again though. he was very poor start of the yr i felt

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,153 ✭✭✭everdead.ie

Two points very much dropped we should of scored more than once Defoe needs to find his scoring touch.

He might give that impression but i have been at a few games this year and hes calling and waving for the ball all the time, this was especially evident at the last CL game against Bremen.

Thought we might hold out for a win and a clean sheet today but not to be,there a hard team to beat at home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,713 ✭✭✭Cianan2

I thought Pav should have started ahead of Defoe today, but can't really complain with a point at St. Andrews. Yes, we should have won, but Brum are really good on their home turf. Pity we didn't close the gap between us and Chelsea today, though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,395 ✭✭✭Hatch99

Watched the game on the net. Played quite well in the first half, but I had said it to a mate after the first goal, that we needed a 2nd bigtime. They were always gonna have a spell when they would make a couple of chances.
JD & Crouch should have finished the game between them, and as football goes, when you dont take your chances, you will always get punished.

Need to avoid defeat next weekend to keep in touch with 4th.

Forget our strikers, whack Krancjar on the left and play Bale up front :)
