Combating moderator glare

Sorry, no "Get out of jail free cards" in this thread, wrong type of moderator! :p

So, I've had my T8 a while now and it indeed had some glare issues from the scope mounted lamp reflecting light back from the mod and ruining the sight picture.

I tried various fixes which didn't work for me, I appreciate there are different factors for differently set up types of rifle/mod/lamp etc., including...

Flower pot over the lamp to cut out excess light.
Mounting the lamp father back on my scope.
Covering the mod & barrel with camo wrap.

What did work for me was to bring the rifle out one night, picked out a tree 130 yards away and I gradually taped up the end opening of the scopes sunshade (please note, do not get tape on the lens of your scope!). Came a point where the reflected light was completely cut out and I could still see very very well, looked at sheep 350-400 yards out on the hill no problem at all.

It's a cheap effective fix for me, and likely for a lot of other people too.

Yeah, I know the front lens is dirty

    Hi John
I have a t8 on my tikka tactical and I use a scope mounted clulite. I have no problem with glare.
I wonder is it because of the mat finish of my scope, barrel & mod.
Or is it because my scope is mounted a bit higher than yours. If I was to draw a line from the top of the mod it would strike just below the bell of my scope. Where as your scope is mounted nearly flush with the barrel.

And my light is about 5" above the barrel

Schmidt and Bender do an extension tube for their scopes - protects from rain and such. I wonder would one of these solve the problem:confused:

Not for me, the Nightforce already has a sunshade extension, and another one would just look stupid :D

I'd say it's the height of your lamp Poulo, my barrel is shiny but everything else is matt, and like I said camo wrap didn't have much of an effect.

I would bet that higher mounts would solve your problem.
Do you no anyone with higher mounts that might let you try it.
If not I have a spare set of 30 mm mounts that will fit a picatinny rail that you can try.

Cheers for the offer Poulo, the tape suits me down to the ground. Seems to be working grand with no noticeable side effects ;) (waits for the Specsavers jokes...) :p

Simple black sock over mod. held on with elastic, worked great for me, and their low mounts with a redfield tracker 3-12 x44 scope so it's almost behind the moddy. This lad was taken at around 200 yards with no effect from glare.

This works very well. The sock that is

John the reflection comes off the back of the mod so you only need to cover this part of the mod with something. A bit of camo tape works well for that.

Your loosing a lot of light transfer, ie brightness, through the lens with what your doing.

I wrapped the mod, including it's back end, and barrel in camo wrap already, didn't find it as good as the tape. I'll try it again to be sure to be sure ;) (when I get home!).

The sock man!! the sock!! :D

it soaks the light , the tape may still be reflecting some.

    and its much cheaper ;)

Jez I dunno Fish, I figure the sock would be warmer around my foot than the mod :pac:

I'll give it a go when I return to Injun country, if I'm able to, snowed in here this morning :pac: Would post pics but no lead for camera phone here.

To keep youir feet warm give them a coating in Vasoline and then put on you sock and boots... they'll stay warm all day ... old rugby trick :D

    Feels funny at first...:o

First time I used the sock trick i didn't put the elastic band on and was using the first round through to make the hole in the sock. The sock ended up 25y away. :o

Sorry but he are all wrong. I would bet that higher mounts WILL sort out the problem.
As it is the scope is looking straight into the back of the mod.

Well so is mine(looking into the back of the moddy) and I tried higher mounts and it didn't help.. only the sock fixed it.
