    which red button
if its on the top,try turning the thermostat beside it down a fraction
if it is this high limit stat, fit a pipestat to the pump and this will help

Is your rads and water heating, If not then its prob your circulating pump, If they are heating as normal, it might be thermostat thats goosed.
Try turning stat down while burner is running and see if it switches off. If it switches off and goes to lockout then it might be control box or stat problem.

It's a problem with the burner, temperature won't bring on that light.
Possibly the oil pump seizing when it gets hot or as was mentioned a control box problem.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I think I am suffering from the same problem. It's been happening for over a year, and the cold snap has inspired me to look into it. What happens in my case is the following: turn on the heating, burner will start up and heat the radiators and water. When it hits the high limit stat it locks out, and will only restart when I press the reset button the burner. Over the weekend I cleaned out the combustion chamber, the photocell and replaced the thermostat, but it's still not restarting when the temperature drops - any ideas. The radiators to get hot, (but not 'piping hot' ) so I don't think it's the circulation pump. Anyone have an ideas? Only other thing is there is no stat in the house, just a timer and on/off switch.

    Thanks,

if the thermostat is ok the high limit stat should not kick in unless you have it set too high.

no offence but you should really get in an engineer, for the sake of a few quid it will save you headaches and damaging it more.

Thanks Funky lover/spark pea - but the thermostat was replaced on Saturday with no change in the burner lockout problem. I was hoping to have an idea what was wrong before engaging an engineer to avoid being fleeced.

is the high limit stat kicking in and then burner locking out?

your thermostat should be knocking off the burner before high limit stat takes over.

It seems to be a bit of both - if I set my thermostat low, the burner will knock off, but if I then raise the thermostat the burner will instantly fire up. However, if I don't touch the thermostat, the burner will not kick in, instead it will go in to lock out. If I set the thermostat low, the burner will fire up, heat to the required temp and turn off. If I let the system cool, the burner will not fire up on it's own, but if I turn off and on the power it will usually (but not always) fire up.

However, if I set the thermostat to it's max, the burner will knock off (before the radiators get too hot) and will go in to lock out. So I'm a bit confused.

All the radiators have been bled and every radiator gets to a very similar temperature. All thoughts are welcome!

cheers lads for the info in the end it was a
dodgy fuel pump changed the burner as it was really
old anyways.didnt realise they now come as kero or diesel
oil,not like the old ones were you can adjust the
    pressure, thanks again lads
