Portlaoise to Dublin (no motorway)

i only have a provisional so i cant go on the motorway but can i get to dublin city centre from portlaoise without the motorway/

The old road still exists, through Ballybrittas, Monasterevin, Kildare, Newbridge, Naas and the on to the N7 at the ball in Naas where the road is not motorway.

my friend has said it will be hard on petrol, but believe it or not 4.50e got me to limerick from portlaoise on it so it wont be too bad i dont think

R445 to Naas; bear in mind that after Naas you will be on a three lane dual carriageway as there is no "old road" for most of it. Its not motorway so you are allowed.

that is the part that frightens me most as ive never been past naas on my own, any tips for me so i can survive?

There is no such thing as a "provisional" - you have a learner's permit.

Aren't learner permits restricted to 150cc (I think there was some revision that change that to kW)?

You can bypass Naas (north ring road) and much of the Naas Road.

Wear dayglo vest, Ride in centre of your lane, Be aware of your surroundings by using your mirrors and looking at your blindspots. Read the road ahead for signs, traffic, road surface.
The best advice is to know that everyone is trying to kill you so if you see them first, you have a better chance of living.

i dont suppose there is 1 out of the 3 lanes that will take right into dublin is there? or will i have to change from 1 to the other

sounds good, i agree with an earlier comment that it would be a hell of a lot safer to use the motorway than the "back roads"

From Naas, stay in lane 1 all the way to Newlands cross (Bewleys hotel) and after that, before the mad cow/m5/Luas, get in to 2nd lane to head towards the city. That is a dangerous part of the road with traffic skipping lanes without indicators, so be careful.
