    Thats frightening tbh.

I wonder if it was a random beating or if the thugs knew their victim. This is pretty terrifying tbh.

My brother took the train the Sunday before at 8.35 am from Limerick to meet me in Dublin for the weekend. I asked him to take a taxi to the station because I didn't like the area in the morning. He walked it in the end-if it was a week later, it might have been him in the hospital.

I hope the guy is ok :(

In what timespan is it actually safe to walk the streets in Limerick? 2pm til 3.45pm ???

As an American who has visited Limerick twice, I've always stayed at the Glentworth Pery's hotel across from the casino. Once in 2005, and in 2009.

When I read these things (plus about the girls on catherine st), makes me want to stay somewhere else on my next visit. Has that area really gotten that nasty that you wouldn't recommend a visitor stay there?
    Cheers from USA,

I would say that this could have happened in 2005 or 2009 i would not let put you off.

Hotel prices have come down a lot since 2005, 2009. Crime has too.

Theres no details in this assault yet, the people could have been known to each other etc. I wouldnt worry about it too much. If you were comfortable in the Pery before, you'll be comfortable there again.

Try Galway, Cork, Dublin - anywhere. I'm not trolling here when I say Limerick is the least pleasant part of Ireland that I've ever been to. Sorry folks, don't mean to offend. :(

Well I'm sure there are other nice places in Ireland, but I have to say it is the PEOPLE I met in Limerick that made me return.

I was travelling in France back in '05 and had some spare time, so booked 3 nights at the Best Western Perys... First time to Ireland ever in my life. First day I arrived, I met 2 people that I'm still friends with to this day. In fact, I'm returning for another friends wedding Sept '11. Prob staying at the Absolute this next time cuz that's where the wedding reception is...

It's the people I met who keep me coming back. I prefer not to tourist, but more to meet people and learn about a community. I have enjoyed the Tait's square area for my lodging, which is why I was concerned when I saw this thread about the area I usually stay in. I wouldn't even read these boards if I didn't care about coming back to Limerick. I will return!!!!!! :)
    Cheers,
    Skottoman

Ah, fair enough, that's a different matter altogether. I've family there (but in the county, not the city). The folks are great, it's just the city I find nasty.

Called me biased if you will as I'm from Limerick myself but I have to say many Limerick city people I meet are the most genuinley nice, decent and honest folk you could meet. Have done my fair share of drinking in Limerick over the years too and can't recall seing any fights...certainly nothing serious, maybe the odd guy with a few too many drinks on him causing a bit of noise like you would get anywhere else, but cant say Ive even seen that too often if ever much. No doubt there is a bad element there but I do genuinely believe the media blow things out of proportion.

Compared with other places in Ireland I've lived, People in LImerick are generally more polite and courteous, apart from a small (but very visible) minority.

Honestly, I think it stems from caution - a wariness of antagonising the wrong person.

If I must be critical the one thing that does annoy me about Limerick city is the amount of jokers asking people for fags on the street...sorry bud do you have a fag or sorry bud could you spare a bit of change. William Street is very bad for this. Having said that they're generally harmless out and when you say no they never hassle you. Like any other place really there are more serious incidents happening but no worse or moreso than anywhere else I would suggest.

I wouldn't call it a small minority. In my experience you're far more likely to get hassle walking down Limerick's main thoroughfare than you are walking down Patrick St in Cork or O'Connell. Well that's the way i see it anyway. There are just too many nackers and whinos hanging around to make visiting the city centre a pleasant experience. Which is a pity because the city has huge potential if only the city council would get the lead out.
