I have a SWB Cruiser and for farming you couldn't have a better 4x4 just put some AT tires on it

Hi Dasher -- +2 on the landcruiser, I have done a lot of homework on different jeeps and don't think you can go wrong with the landcruiser just make sure the seats for the injectors are done., and yes they are pricey but your getting what you pay for - also the auto seems to be the gearbox of choice for pulling and believe it or not better mpg ( there's a thread on this Auto V Manual --not so far back) Good luck

From just looking around over the last few weeks a ford ranger might be an option. they get good right ups and user reviews and seem to be fairly economical on diesel. Has anyone any experience of these?

Ford ranger from 07 on are good otherwise they are very dated and not great pulling power i have been told.

Sorry to dig this one up but there's no way an auto of the same year is more economical. Based on experience

One thing about getting a Landcruiser, make sure you get the one with the locker on the back axle, (locking switch down by your knee on the right) and make sure the locking actuator works. These tend to be well corroded as theyre a bit of a gunk trap on the rear axle. To test, just go to a loose surface, engage the locker (should be a light showing on the dash) then turn in a tight circle, the rear wheels should be locked together and one should be skidding along. Then disengage the lock and drive off, the lock should disengage after a few seconds.
If the actuator doesnt work, theres a replacement available from millnersoffroad in the uk, Theyre stoopid money from toyota. Can be a good bargaining chip if your buying from a dealer ;)

Hard to find the rear locker on Irish cars it was an optional extra.
UK vehicles had the locking rear diff as standard.

    Not in the 2001 model.

Stealing info now from the UK landcruiser forum....... apparently the actuator is badly positioned and they are usually broken/corroded. Be careful.

Sorry to jump on board I'm also considering purchasing Landcruiser or Patrol from 99 - 03 or 04 depending on price just wondering about reliability and mpg of these jeeps in this age bracket?? by the looks of it patrol of similar yrs does not seem great..

01 LandCruiser 3.0 TD LWB with constant moderate load, mostly short journeys: 26-27 mpg.
