01 Opel Zafira gear problem

    :(

    Hi All,

The other half drives a 2001 Opel Zafira 1.6 16V petrol, and during the week it appears the gear box decided to give up

    The symptoms are
When the engine is running, no gear can be engaged at all, but at a push reverse can be engaged, however there is a massive grinding noise and the car vibrates like it is going to shake itself apart, But when the engine is off there is no problem going through the gears. :(

Can anybody please advise or make some suggestions as to what the problem is. Or suggest a mechanic (not to expensive) in the south Dublin area to repair this.

    Many Thanks in advance.

Sound like the clutch is going.. Or the release arm is broke.

simnple job for a clutch centre.

(Unless is it is a cable clutch -in which case it might just need adjusting!)

Zafiras don't have a Clutch cable,
    it's a hydraulic system.

Check the fluid level,it's possible that the slave cylinder in the gearbox is leaking.

Hi Muckey, thanks for your reply

it appears that all gears can be selected when the engine is not running

hi aido , the clutch on your zafira is hydraulic and so cannot be adjusted . its either the clutch disc is worn out or whats more common on zafiras is the clutch release bearing has collapsed either way you need to take the gearbox down and replace the whole clutch assembly , dont be tempted to relace just the bearing or the disc as its a false economy and you'll just end up taking the box out again . hope this helps ;)

    Thanks 355beemer

So basically you recommend the clutch needs to be replaced :(

Any idea on the cost of this, is it worth doing on a 2001 zafira, and do you have a recommendations of anyone in the Tallaght area to do the job (obviously its not driving) and can do without the extra expence of a tow truck.

    Thanks again

sorry aido i'm on the opposite side of the country so cant recommend any one to you :( as for whether or not its worth doing you have to take the overall condition of the car into consideration if the clutch is the only job that needs doing then i'd say do it , its not a specialised job any competent independant mechanic should be able to do it. I would charge in the region of 450ish for it if it was me .
