Trackday Car - Opinions and experiences..

I'm currently in the market for a trackday car, preferably a saloon/coupe/hatch that i can also use occasionally on the road. My budget is £12k stg, and that includes a set of racewheels and track tyres, bucket seat, timing equipment, suspension mods etc. I've done a lot of trawling online and in magazines and i've narrowed my choice down to an E46 M3 (02-03) or a Subaru STI (02-03). There are plenty of both available for between 7k - 10k, my heart says beemer but the head says scooby, what do ye think?
Looking for opinions/comments from anyone who's driven either on track or if you know of anyone running either as a regular track toy.

    Thanks.

Driven all of the above, I found Subaru`s generally very understeery. Driven E36,E46,E90 M3`s very nice motors decent drives and would make a decent track car. For you budget you could get a nice first Elise, its a perfect car for a twisty circuit like Mondello.
Good point about the understeering nature of the STI, but it has a bulletproof stove which will take a good thrashing. As satisfying as the M3 would be to fling about would it not be a bit soft in comparison to the STI, maintenance bills could get quite hefty....? I missed out on a race prepped Mini Cooper JCW a few weeks ago, good spares package with it too, it was advertised at €18k in Holland....sick i missed it:(. I haven't really considered an Elise, simply because i think they're underpowered, though they probably compare favourably in the bhp per tonne stakes with the STI AND M3??

Will it take the thrashing without costing me a fortune in bills though? Maybe my perception of the Beemer as been a bit soft is off the mark??

beemer engine will take twice the abuse of a boxer engine if you keep an eye on the heat gauge. e36 m3 ftw, 5k, throw 5k of mods at it and youd have some fun

you could go for some thing like this with a new engine maybe an 2lt XE and a manta gearbox which would give you some thing with a bit of pedigree
