Satellite Broadband

BBC Tech reports are now pretty useless...

If you don't mind 750ms + latency and a very low cap.

Avanti is competing with Astra2Connect and also Tooway. It's partially an ESA experiment and also for Military Comms.

Tooway's new KaSat (about x10 capacity of Hylas1 ) is launching end of December. It's the "real" European "Not spot" Satellite.

It will be January or February before Avanti's service is available.
End of April/Beginning of May for Ka-Sat if the launch is OK.
    See http://www.techtir.ie/blog/watty/ka-sat-countdown
    and http://www.techtir.ie/blog/watty/hylas-launch

Satellite is often better than 3G/Mobile. But it's a poor substitute for "Real" Broadband

    Satellite:
    • No self hosting (i.e. even IP camera). More strictly enforced than terrestrial ISPs
    • Only Sat ISP supplied VPN or VLAN. No direct VPN
    • Low Cap. Not suitable traffic allowance for video watching or downloads.
    • Extremely high latency. Typically more than 750ms
    • Serious "lag" on VOIP between question and responce.
    • Impossible for Gaming.

Thanks for the background info Watty. I'm on a crappy eircom line, miles from the exchange, and getting 0.3meg and paying handsomely for it. Despite the disadvantages of satellite, do you think it would be an option? I'm not into gaming, just general browsing including some streaming video and a small bit of downloading.

Your only issue then might be Cap.

The Ka-Sat, if successful, may bring down the monthly charge and increase Cap. The Install cost is likely to be similar as it's the same equipment:

Tooway is the service on the new Ka-Sat. That's exactly what the three companies above are selling. It's the best Domestic and Ordinary Business system.
There may be a new earth station using the old Elford/Middleton Eircom site (not using the big dish though).
