Charolais Christmas Cracker - Sat 4th December

It's coming up to that time of year again. The Charolais Christmas Cracker sale is in Carrick on Shannon on Sat 4th December. I hope to go to give my father in law a hand to show a couple of bulls. Any other boardsies going?

There are 96 Bulls / 43 Females entered, a good bit down on the record 159 Bulls / 71 Females last year. I think they inspected all animals to reduce numbers this year, as the sale dragged on a lot last year.

It will be hard to beat last years €24,000 for the Texan calf. I don't see any Texan GIE calves this year, the most popular sires are Doonally New (suprise suprise) and Major with 6 calves each, and Jupiter and Thrunton Voldemort with 5 calves each. I wonder what breeds will make the best prices this time around?

I think alot of the bull sales (esp carrick) will be a bit like the shopping centres I'm afraid...... big crowds there, but not alot of buyers.

Still it's a nice way to spend a saturday. Was down carrick cracker 2008 thought I'd never get out of it the roads were that icy

Had planned on picking up a second bull in Ennis tomorrow but there isn't a huge selection going to be there, and a good few of the bulls seen the previous sale I think it was on in tullamore.

I stopped into Ennis for a look. It was very slow to get going, about 10 or so lots went through at the start without a bid.
€ 3,600 was top price with about 6 or so over €3,000. Some nice bulls there. You could buy a decent enough bull for between €2k & €2.5k.

Liked the look of the very last bull sold, made €2,500. By Doonally New, dam by Organdi, yet 4 stars for calving. Taught he was cheap at that.

Lovely looking cattle the purbred charolais, when they're all cleaned up and presented well. Maybe when I win the Lotto!

don't know anything about the charolais bloodlines but I must say I'm impressed with the way the sale's catalogues are presented on the website

    other societies take note

Have to confer what pakalasa says,
What surprised me was how good the demand was for the good bulls. I wasn`t overly impressed with the bull they chose as champion He was out of Dromiskin Viceroy, hes was a fine bull that had all the stars but to be he looked 'segmented' if you know what i mean, and too wide across his hip bones. the reserve champion looked a nice softer bull and better on the legs.

I don't think Ill make the Christmas cracker as I `ll hold off till after the winter to get another bull

Its in the North west breeding Society Grounds on the Sligo road out of carrick on shannon. Go out by supermacs and then 100m further take a left at King and Moffet Electrical. Follow that narrow laneway up into the football pitch and the sales yard is at the end of it.

It will be hard beat it alrite, but i know that there are gona be some Super bulls by Major and Oldstone egbert, iv seen these at the summer shows and know some of the breeders and i reckon that €10,000 could be beat more than once,;)nice

I find it hard to believe there could be profit out of paying 10k for a bull, at most he`ll service 25-30 cows. you`d need to be getting 100 euro per calf above a standard 2-3k bull.
Who`s paying these prices are they farmers or breeders?

The difference between say a 4* (Stars - across breeds) bull and a 5 star bull is about 35 Euro per weanling. If you were split 50/50 between spring/autumn calving then you could have him serving 60 cows per year.
60x35= 2,100 per year. Or 10,500 Euro over 5 years.
He really would want to be earning his keep alright, to justify paying the extra 7k Euro.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,087 ✭✭✭vanderbadger

young bull might have 5 stars but are those figures worth a damn really? I mean they probably wont have any reliable statistics until he is probably long dead, or he could be a french bull and they might have no data on him anyway so he could have a very low star rating while being a great bull, i think the eurostar thing is a handy guideline but i wouldnt put too muc faith in it either

    or AI the cows

1.7 straws per cow X 10 Euro per staw = 17 euro per cow

multiply by 60 cows = 1020 euro per year and no feed/vet/housing costs to worry about

and more importantly an AI straw cant pin you against the wall!

Preaching to the converted! I'm using all AI as it is.

Seriously lads how the hell does one manage to catch them bulling?
If your doing suckler then some of the cows are only in heat for an hour and this could be very early in the morning!!

Great system if it works, AI calfs are going to be the pick of the crop

Chin-ball harness on teaser bull or even a bullock

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,101 ✭✭✭bogman_bass

Couple of bullocks and tail paint towards the end of the season.
Also write down anything thats bulling before the season so you can keep an eye out.

I dont buy into this "bulling for one hour" theory.
The exception rather than the rule IMO

That's the Clenagh herd. He had a bull in AI there a few years back, Clenagh Nick (NKC). His dam was by Cavan Chap (IC27), anyone remember him? Showing my age now!

ya the Clenagh herd is right, his name is generally not too far from the top of list on alot of the sales, think he had a heifer in ennis as well

yea, we had a good bit of snow around carrick on shannon last night and the roads are a bit of a mess. More promised for tonight so its sensible to cancel it.

Reschuled for the 15th of January now. Fingers crossed the snow will be gone by then. :)

Bad form if it is. It's advertised in this weeks IFJ on page 3 for today! Surely the ICCS could have made the call to postpone before it went to press.

There might not be many breeders there, but i DOUBT if all the lads going for a look were informed:rolleyes: Seems there'I be alot of christmas shoppers in Carrick-on-S this weekend in wellies!!:D

Think so, Charolais site says Christmas cracker sale re-scheduled for Saturday, 15th january 2011, and no sign of snow for the weekend for a change:rolleyes:, must head over to the weather forum just to double check...

Not sure if I'll make it on Saturday yet, will know later in the week

    Jasus lads,

I was only there for an hour. Prices for both bulls and heifers were quite good. Anything with a bit of quality seemed to be delivering on price - well in comparison to years gone by anyway.

ye but the champion heifer was unsold at 5 grnd!! i tell ya lads breeders had no business there today if they werent in fine condition

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 24_7

couldnt get to it, What were champion bull heifer called, how much bull go for

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭reilig

I'm not part of the Chaorlais breeding scene, so I don't take in names

The junior champion bull was unsold at €6k. Bulls that he had beaten in the show had made more than him - but if I was the owner I'd have let him go at €6k because I can't see priices being as good further down the line. But maybe he has a buyer for him.
