How's your battery/do you use the car for short distances only? AFAIK the defroster is automatically switched off the battery voltage is too low.

Are you using it whilst sitting in heavy city traffic, it will drain the battery if you are.

Most, if not all heated rear windows will switch off once they get up to temp, to save draining your battery. Is this whats happening? Also, if you switch off the ignition it will also switch off, for the same reason. Otherwise I would suspect a relay or similar, thats tripping off too soon.

How good is your battery? This cold weather will kill any battery approaching the end of it's life. I would check it first. Good luck.

Technically the cold doesn't kill your battery, the heat of summer does, but once winter comes the effects of a worn down battery are more pronounced.

    @ elchanco

Get a new switch from scrapyard and avoid the rest of the comments here :D
Your car alternator is powerful enough to feed all your car electric system and your battery wont drain because of the rear window heating.

    @ VinnyTGM

Cold is what kills batteries, even brand bew ones which didnt see any summer.

the switch flickers from on/off and sometimes wont go off. very f''' annoying! Typical than tonight, it stayed off when the window was frozen over!

It's a timed switch on many modern cars, including modern Fords.

It will always turn it's self off after a short while as it really strains the alternator and pushes down fuel economy as a result. On a really frosty day, you might have to push it 3 time to clear a well frozen and iced up window.

on a normal day, it flicks from on/off for long periods. Ive given up on pressing the button now. Im happy if it just stays off..
