Does anybody know please what's behind the present Volvo push on special edition S40 and V50s? Does it mean the end of the line for these models or a revamp on the way perhaps?

The S40/V50 are being allowed to live out the rest of their lives peacefully now that the S60/V60 have arrived. I'd be expecting them to disappear over a period of the next two years and their void be filled by a 5 door version of the C30 hatchback.

That would explain it then - thanks.

They have just launched the special edition "Classic" model with lots of standard kit. They did this with the previous model too back in around 2003. That was replaced by the current model in the second half of 2004.

If you don't mind owning a car that was designed 7 years ago and don't need alot of interior space then you could do alot worse for that kind of money than buy an S40. A used one probably makes more financial sense though as they do tend to suffer from high depreciation.

D3 is the only good option engine wise though.

Which isn't available in the S40 at the moment - they are all going in to the S60.

There is the option of the D4 :D

New D2 is much better than the old 1.6, and is available. I'd say the D4 is factory order (and it's the same price as the D3 was before the €2,500 reduction).

What comes in these Classic models? It's not on the Volvo November price list I got through last week.

Six speed gearbox aside, what is exactly different with this unit over the old one?

Volvo Car Ireland don't seem to give a fiddlers about our market anymore. They are always one of the last to update their website globally and it is silly the way they haven't made an effort to replace any of the many dealers they had who have gone bust over the past two years. It probably won't be long before they become like Alfa Romeo.

Regarding the car, I reckon it will be similar to the Classic models that have gone before (full leather, upgrade alloys etc).

It's advertised and on the price list alright, but you can't order one and there are non in stock. All D3 engines are earmarked for the S60.

The D2 is 115ps so not a huge power increase, but the 6 speed box suits the car much better. Couldn't believe the difference when I drove one earlier this year. Wasn't looking forward too is as the 1.6d always felt a bit dead, but there was plenty of pick up in all gears on the new model.

Week 46 price list still has the cheapest S40 as the D2 ES. I'll see if I can find out what's on the classic models.
