My apologies if it was 10 years old when you bought it, but I believe 1966 is only 44 years ago, :D Still a long time however...

My grandmothers step mother had a 1950s fridge when she moved in to sheltered accomodation; it wouldn't fit in the apartment so it had to be left in her old house. She also had an even older formerly gas powered (!) fridge out of use and using it as a cupboard. Wasn't compatible after they changed the gas pressure in Dublin whenever that was and she got the 50s one second hand then.

Yer one with the 77 year old fridge was given a new one by Electrolux apparently: http://www.whitegoodshelp.co.uk/wordpress/electrolux-fridge-retires-at-77/

Didn't those old fridges use CFC gases instead of Freon like new fridges to keep it cool?
