So started a new course, and it's about 3 months later and I've come out to most people in my year. Not that I was avoiding telling anyone, the opportunity to say it just didn't present it's self. So I tell this one guy, via electronic means (the topic did come up) and he was like "oh that's fine lad, I've no problem with that". I bumped into him in town randomly with his GF on his arm. She kept smiling at me and didn't speak a word.

Then she's adding me on Facebook and asking me to go shopping with her. And I'm like , who are you? I've literally never said anything more than a "hello" to the girl. and she's gotten it into her head that we're best friends. The two of them are from the country though. Still, What's all that about?

Blame SATC. You are a pretty handbag that talks.

OR maybe she was being nice?

It's very easy for a woman to be way more secure around a guy and she could be genuine.

Maybe your friend asked her to offer to show that it really isn't an issue for him.

perhaps, over compensation. He's not really my friend though, Like I chat to him the odd time. we wouldn't hang out or anything.

I think it is very unusual for someone to want to be your friend after one fleeting meeting.
Friendship grows organically and anyone pushing it out of the blue would raise an eyebrow for me.
She probably doesn't have a gay friend, and now, you're it!
    Maybe I'm just paranoid though....

My housemate is the ultimate fag hag. I hate the way she calls me and some mates "honey", but even worse.... "chicken". I fúcking hate it. And she knows it

OP, randomers add people on fb all the time having only met them once or twice, or sometimes even if they've only been in the same room as them at a party. I don't think it's a gay/straight/fag hag issue. It's a phenomenon know as bad facebook etiquette.

The shopping request is a giveaway. Just tell her deadpan that you don't like shopping, and delight in watching her bubble burst.

Yup, when I came out, the demographic of my friends changed from 4:1 to about 1:4 in terms of a male to female ratio. Funny that. And I'm as laddish as anyone I dare say.

Well she's only 18, and from the Bog so maybe she thought that when moving to the city she had to bag herself a pet gay, like they have on tv.

To be fair, I'm sure it's an improvement on the perception of the gays of the people from the bog 20 years ago. They still need to learn we're regular people but it's progress!

In fairness, it's very likely it could be nothing to do with you being gay. Why does it have to be?

If you've been on facebook long you will know that people you barely know add you for the sake of extending their network or just because they want to have a bigger friends count (sad, I know).

I've had countless requests from random people I met while drunk, people I've met once and barely talked to and people I don't recognise at all etc.

Sorry to be harsh, but it kind of annoys me that people jump the gun about everything other people think/do as if being so gay is so 'centre of attention' that just because someone adds you on facebook they MUST be trying to get a 'new gay pet' :S

I know exactly what you mean. They basically aspire to be Karen Walker from Will and Grace, with a lovely little gay pet to play around with! To be fair most girls do realise that W&G isn't real but there's always one (or more)!

I know plenty of girls (who are young now to be fair) who are obsessed with the GBF phenomenon. Its like they think gay men are like..cute terriers or something.

I might have told this before. I came out to a friend of mine a few months ago. We met the next day, in a shopping centre of all places  After talking to a salesman, who she thought was cute, she told me the from now on we could talk about guys. Excuse me?

Ah come on - the girl asked him to go shopping with him. Read between the lines.

It's pretty bizarre. I have to say if someone did that to me I'd probably respond with something along the lines of:

"Sorry, I don't think I actually know you and I really don't enjoy shopping. While I appreciate the offer, I'd be out of my comfort zone going shopping with a stranger! All the best, [your name here]"

as someone said earlier, if the friendship didn't grow organically then there is something wrong. You can't just force a friendship as it is not just natural then. If I were you, OP, I would just politely decline the offer of shopping or whatever else she asks, if that is not something you want to do at this moment. She'll get the point quickly if she's not an airhead. There may be occasions in the future when you, she and the boyfriend socialise a bit more and that you two will connect a bit better and possibly at that point, you might want to take part in things with her. But it should all be a natural development and mutual to both of you.

I agree people do seem to be pushing a sentiment that people from the countryside are ignorant morons.

Why not take the opportunity to inform her that homosexuality is in fact just attraction to someone of the same sex.

Explain to her shopping has no relevance to you as a gay man. If she realises her misconceptions she might make a good friend.

ask her what number blade she wants?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I've just asked a few girls and ladies of different ages and nationalities about this and was told that the ultimate accessory, if you want to be utterly trendy, is to have a gay man on your arm, ESPECIALLY to go shopping with. AND, if you can believe it, to be seen going into the changing rooms with you! If I was asked venture there, I would have to politely request a vomit bag.

Went shopping with my sister-in-law once. Never again. With any person of the opposite sex! It's not shopping, rather an endless browse through hundreds of stores, lunch, further endless browsing and then an i/v drip and an oxygen tent at home because you are exhausted, out of your mind, and she hasn't bought a thing!

    Hi
One of my best friends is gay, and I do not love him for that fact, I love him for him. And actually he is more straight acting then a lot of men I know.
I wouldnt dream of asking him to tag along with my to do girly stuff....he does happen to have a lot of simular interests as me....which is why we are so close!!
I have spent mant a night in the G etc, and all I see is guys with their female friends, so please explain that to me!!!
I mean one night a few weeks ago, towards the end of the night, all I seen was gay men and their female friends, so obviously gay men do like having a female on their arm!! cause that is all I see.
I wasnt impressed at all, I actually felt like a faghag....however my friend comes out with me to straight clubs all the time, and I return the favour..
If I am being honest I enjoy the gay scene, I can be relaxed their knowing I wont be chatted up if I am not in the humour or interested...

But I think it is sad, that some women use gay men...but I think some like it..

my old flatmate last year always thought since i was gay i MUST be good at giving her advice on her relationship on a daily basis. Im terrible at advice, really. Iv witnessed my advice make people cry when it shouldn't. Im gay - not the dear deirdre problem page!

Same housemate also thought since i was gay i MUST be good at dancing. If you consider good dancing keeping your legs still while attempting the robot 360 degree arm twist good dancing, then sure, im a good dancer.

Any time the usual gang are heading out - my mate picks me up in a taxi and we pick up a friend again on the way. This friend usually insists on me running in to see which pai of tights are better. DOES IT LOOK LIKE I GIVE A ****! Im not a fashion designer. Leave me alone.

These 2 girls mentionned above always need and want to know whats going on with my love lofe. they're more infectious than the plague! they really are fag hags in that sense but they're pretty decent friends too

Wow - this should be in ranting and raving.

I was 17, drank too much, puked, sitting on the bathroom floor at the party, miserable. Enter totally sober girl to ask me what I thought of her skirt. She's lucky I had finished.
