Human Sludge Spreading on Land

Query to anyone that has experience of this. A neighbour has announced to me that he is planning on spreading human sludge on his land that I am renting. To be honest it makes my stomach churn at the thoughts of it. I spoke to my teagasc advisor about it. He tells me there is no health threat to animals once it has been spread for a few weeks or humans tho he's not too fond of it either. A neighbour of his is spreading it beside his house and it is absolutely stink! I know that the company getting rid of the stuff must soil test and complete a nutrient management plan and its not everywhere that it will suit (fingers crossed) due to heavy metal content of the stuff. My cattle sheds are beside the land and im worried that birds will be bringing it into the shed and it will bring a coliform or salmonella risk into the house. Does anyone have experience of this stuff?

Bad I know and I don;t agree with it either. Worse still was when they used to spread blood from hospitals, the lads spreading it were getting huge money too. Was disgusting!

That would be a bit of help alright but as far as i'm told its in cake form and spread by orbital spreader. It will also affect my nitrates as i wont be spreading cattle slurry on top of it

I understand that its spread in pellet form which has been treated (some form of pasteurisation) to remove any threats of disease or threats of poisoning. And before the pc brigade have a go at me, I don't spread it and wouldn't. Its illegal to spread raw sewerage, blood from hospitals, slaughter houses etc. etc. The best crop to take sewerage is willow - it will soak up all the nutrients from it and help the willow to grow very fast.
It should have no smell and if it does, there's something wrong.

That's bio-fert you're talking about, there is some old style sludge about too, I've seen it and know two fellas spreading it, you need a lagoon to store it and one of the big orbital type spreaders to spread it.

I think that most of it (the sludge) goes to tillage farms for ploughing in.

Having studied this as a module in college i was told that it should be spread on crops for power stations such as elephant grass and willow- and not crops for human consumption due to the hight amounts of chemicals still in it and alum i think..its been a while! Yes it is also in solid form which they call ''CAKE'' (tasty!)

had a neighbour who used to empty septic tanks for people and spread it where the dairy cows where grazing:eek:

Neighbouring farmers of mine empty their own septic tanks and spread it with the slurry... I think i would prefer to see it put it the slurry pit first and diluted with the animal slurry first rather than spreading it on the land in raw state. Dairy cows..! so my own milk is the best idea yeah? haha

This neighbour has no slurry storage facilities whatsoever so I dont know where it will be kept before spreading. According to our teagasc man its going to be that cake form. Im told that anyone in bord bia quaity assurance scheme or grain assurance schemes cannot use this so we wont be able to rent this land if he chooses to spread it.

There must have been a alot because I seen 5 loads of it spread by an ordinary slurry tanker one day. I'd love to know how they fill it though. Would need some stomach for that, We replumbed a gynacology ward a few years back and there was some stuff in the sink traps etc:P Jaysus, still turns me to think of it:D

Blood is full of trace elements and nutrients and im sure you would get paid for letting it be spread , i suppose with the other stuff the only benefit would be, if your an avid birdwatcher you may spot an elusive sh-t- hawk :D

Well, bloods full of trace elements, protein that can be broken down, essentialy super food for the soil,
Human waste isfull of nutrients, amonia(on the way to becoming nitrogen),and good source of OM.
Would have thaught these go on tillage ground?, any time i seen sludge aka 'cake' its been ploughed in more or less straight away

It is high in P and K, but the heavy metal that usually causes problems is molybdenum, which locks up copper. AFAIK sludge should be ploughed in immediately by the contractors who spread it.

Our neighbour spreads the human waste stuff on his ground it used be liquid and could be smelt literally for miles around :( horrible stuff :P
Now it comes in 40ft trucks tippped in the field and loaded with a teleporter and spread with a bredal lime/fert spreader just ahead of the tractor ploughing the field.
I guess its a handy way of getting your soil tested each year for free!
What we cant believe is they pread it on rented ground!
Another farmer locally used get the blood from the factory and swore by the stuff and claimed it was great stuff to grow grass
