so good poeple on boards.ie helped me with info. i got my psp back, bought 8gb memory stick and 20 quid for psn . woot!

i got CTR: crash team racing allready. i just cant miss on that, i loved this game.

so now i want to get FF game.

back in the day i finished FF7, and i loved it.

I allmoust finished FF8, dont remember what happened, and why i havent finished it.

    FF9 - newer played it.

So i want to get an FF game, and i was planing on going FF7, but then alot of people said that FF9 was really damn good.

so what would you suggest me? Go good and safe way, get FF7 and go again ( i just love that game). Or try ff9?

FF8. I think it was seriously underrated in the FF series and is quite a decent game apart from a ridiculously hard 4th disc.

I'd get FF7 before 9, i enjoyed it more. 8 is also great. Just get all three :p

IX is by far the best of the PS1 games. It does look back to the older FF games, with the characters each having unique skills in battle and a more fantasy than cyberpunk/sci-fi aesthetic. If you don't like the sound of that, I'd go VII again, the nostalgia makes it play well still, while VIII is just a mess thanks to the story being nuts and the junction system pretty dodgy.

i really love ff7 as there was so much stuff to do and not so linier. chocobo farm, hunting ultima weapons. gold soucer etc.

was ff9 like this? or was it linier? as i cant find much info on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭landsleaving

Yeah there was a lot of extra stuff to do. It's fairly similar in that way to VII, so if you enjoyed that element I'd say you'll like IX a lot

get 9 if you haven't played it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,200 ✭✭✭Mindkiller

As always you should always get the PS1 games off the US store. The NTSC copies play at full speed.

And get FF9. I only played it for the first time recently and it's dated marvellously well. Has a weird bit of a lag-spike problem when casting spells on PSP though. This is for the PSN version and custom-made versions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,561 ✭✭✭✭Varik

IX is far better than the others past or present, and that's not just because i love steampunk stuff.
I finished it again on psp a while ago but before that i had gone back to it when grinding on the other games got a bit much, i started X when it came out then before the zanarkand fight had gone back and done it start to finished again did the same with XII (still need to finish it but i'm at the last boss and remember every)

But 8 was underrated and had a good story with the sorceress and such.

so, is FF9 open world like FF7? Exploration is important like in FF7? those silly minigames/tasks? story on each character like in FF7? Searching for hidden stuff? i really hated FFX, as it was such a downgrade from FF7/FF8...

    Yes it has all that

FFIX also has a more assertive protagonist than the other two titles who has no qualms with groping the female lead's ass at any given opportunity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

okay, cheers lads, got ff9 downloading now :) i might top up 10 quid more, and buy theme hospital and constructor, then 10 more for ff7 :D

Still think FFIX is the best game in the series.

No love for 8 ?? I loved it, played through it twice...the 2nd time levelling every character to 100....and Triple Triad...easily the best mini-game in any FF to date !!
Spent ages collecting all the cards and secret GF's

FF7 is great, it has a place in my heart because it was my intro to the series, and so groundbreaking for its day, and of course it had the most bad-ass baddy ever at the time :D

FF9 is brilliant, its more fantasy as the lads said, I also liked the auction house, but the story got a bit messed up at times, with totally uneccessary stuff, where did Necron come out of ?...or what was that Ultimate baddy called...Osmo...
Aside from that It was a great game...catching frogs haha :D....it also has probably my favourite ending, which I won't ruin :)

You obviously haven't played FFVII recently. It's very linear, it only gives the illusion of exploration because it has a world map but you are ferried from point A to B throughout. FF9 is just as linear but has a world map and the sidequests are better. Like FFVII it opens up at the end and becomes a bit more nonlinear.

I'd say get all 3 games but if you had to just get one then get FF9 which is far and away the best of the PS1 games. FFVII has dated a bit, the battle system in particular is beyond simple, it's too easy, sephiroth looks cool but isn't that great and the storyline is a mess but it's great fun. FF8 has a horrendous storyline and annoying characters but it's still loads of fun and well worth picking up.

As said you are best off setting up a US account and getting the games off that (you can get points cards for the US store off ebay, the sellers email you the code). They run at full speed without borders unlike the EU games.

Also whoever said FFVI was crap and implied the same about FFV should be shot. FFVI is the best in the series and FFV is great.

Also FF Tactics on the PSP is well worth playing, one of the best games ever made. Be warned, you'll have to do some levelling up in it and it's bastard hard.

The whole game was a homage to the FF games of old. From FF1-FF5 the last boss always appeared out of no where at the end and it was notorious for that. I figure it's a homage to that (also happens in FF8 as well).

OT but is there any talk of a remake of Final Fantasy VII? I was having good times playing it but the game suddenly froze after a half-hour cutscene and I never went back to it.

There has been talk since that video for the ps3 was shown amd with FF14 failing so badly with only 25,000 people playing the game and most of those still with the free time that came with the game, Square Enix will be looking for some opportunity for a profit.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,407 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Nothing has been announced or even leaked about a remake so don't get your hopes up. Probably not going to happen. Kind of the right thing to do. A direct remake will show up the original games flaws and Cloud will seem like a total pussy like he was in the japanese text with a better translation. If they do change it a lot, ala the excellent FF4 DS port, then you'll have fans up in arms that it's not similar. Still, not like the original isn't available so you can still experience it that way for a tenner.

    Really does depend,

FF7 has not aged well at all. But if you can get over the meh graphics, tis a dam good game and worth the replay.

FF8 again is another "aged poorly" game in the series and allot of people were put off by the Junction system and Squall. That aside, its one of my favs, just for the fact that there is so much depth that you are not seeing in a rushed play through, deffo worth a look.

FF9 was a game i did not like at first, only years later I have picked it up again and actually started to like it. Its aged allot better than the previous two and the depth to this game is staggering to say the least.

Go for 7 to slip back in, 9 next, then 8 when your ready for something else

One of the best things about FF8 is how easily you can break the game. It's great fun taking advantage of the junctioning system, adding magic to your stats that shouldn't be available and abusing GF abilities like the stat +1 abilities you get that add 1 to the stat every level up. If you concentrate on learning the stat 10%, 20% and 30% skills you'll get them. Makes the game far more enjoyable since you don't have to rely on summons all the time that take forever to finish.

It's actually very easy to do. All you do is control what skills your GF develops instead of letting it do it automatically. It actually makes the game much easier so you end up beating it quicker and the GFs become underpowered so you don't have to sit through their animations. FF8 is complicated and not helped by a terrible interface, the GF skill screen is kind of hard to find, but once you understand it it's very easy to abuse. Basically it's like finding job combinations that are broken in FFT like having a knights break skills on a pistol user to smash enemies armour from halfway across the map. Very satisfying.

    This x 10

FF8 has loads of ways of abuse that can make your party unstoppable. Hell, on the third disk, with certain GF abilities you could never be random-attacked as well as grab infinite amounts of the strongest magic to boost your abilities to the max.

When you learn the tricks, this game is actually quite good, also has the best cards mini game in the series (only beaten by blitzball)

Vomits at the thought of another poor soul being inflicted with FF13 herpes, what steaming pile of sh!t that was :(

At least as Retro said 7 gave you the impression that it was not linear, 13 makes no such effort to hide it. 20 hours in I was still holding out hope it would open up.

I quit buying after FFX and from what I have been hearing, I did the right thing.

After playing the whole series, from what i heard about FF12 and 13, it sounds like they have missed the point of what the games were supposed to be and have no appeal for me.

TLDR: Final Fantasy ended when Square-Enix came to pass.

You might like FF12. I thought it was horrible, felt like a single player MMO and exploring the overworld was a chore since the battle system was so poor but the boss fights were excellent. Was a shame the story was rushed and went nowhere. Some people seem to like FF12. I'm not sure why though.

It lends itself to being underratable with such a boring main character, but yes it was one of the best FFs overall.

get .hack game1 and forget the rest of it. my 2cents :pac: you can also try to search the .hack series review at socksmakepeoplesexy website. i have doubts after completing half of the 2nd game and feel so lucky i didnt go down the road of playing all of them lol

Front Mission 3 and Vagrant Story on the PSN are up and well worth playing. Also not Square but Grandia is there as well and there's a good few more on the US store. They don't make JRGs like they used to during the 32-bit era *sniff*

FF IX is my favourite of the series and VIII (together with X) comes right after that.
I mostly judge games for their story and ok, there *is* a big glitch in VIII (but it really never bothered me that much - the ones of you who played it will know what I mean), but besides that those are the ones that I definitely recommend :D

God knows how many hours I racked up playing the FF series...

Got FFVII for my confirmation, back in '99 I think. Got hooked straight away. Everything about that game was awesome, storyline etc.

Year or 2 after that got FFVIII.. Again I was hooked. There was a huge improvement on the graphics compared to FFVII, I think we all remember the opening scene with the waves coming onto the sand, and the music. I loved the card feature too as well as it was something else to play. The end battle was long as well :D I remember I had some skill/feature where you could change your cards into items. I think I changed the Behemoth card into 100 megalixers before going into the end battle :D

Another year or after that I got FFIX. I liked the way they had everything more animated/cartoony, almost as if they went back to a fantasy child's book. I loved the bit too in the mage's village where Vivi had to come to terms with death.

After this I got FFVI when it eventually came out on the PS. And for some reason I cannot remember a thing about it... But I do remember thinking it kicked ass, remember thinking it was probably one of my favourites too.

Played FFX as well. It was only 'good'. Only finished it because I started it and when I did finish it it was piss easy. Although by that time the main characters I was using I had their respective sphere grids finished and was starting to learn the other characters' grids.

Never bothered with the other FF games.

Deffo, had both and by far these are two of the best Square games that came out back in their "golden era" aside from the FF series (to clarify, this is after the success of FF 7-8 and before the "Spirits within" film crippled them).

These made Squaresoft great and showed what their excellance used to be like, while everything Square-Enix touchs now turns to crap.

7,8 and 9 are, for me, three of the best games ever made.

    I love them all equally.

X was beautiful at the time, great battle system imo but Tidus, Yuna, Wakka and Rikku were horrible characters and made me hate it.

XII was **** and XIII has completely shattered my faith in the series.

As for everything pre-VII I never really got into though I might give VI a chance. Didn't like the first 3 games at all. Never played IV or V.

FF1 is very arcahic, FF2 is rubbish and FF3 hasn't dated well so no wonder you didn't like them. Definitely give FF4-6 a play. FF4 is where the games get really good and I still think it's a great game and it's very similar to FF4. FF5 is basically FF3 but done right. The storyline isn't much but battle system is fantastic and it's great fun to mess around with Job combinations and break the game. FF6 on the other hand is for me the best in the series by a large3 margin, you definitely need to play it.
