    WITH protests already taking place and others planned for the weekend in revolt against the government’s handling of our current economic crisis and feelings of shame that the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the EU and Britain are coming to our rescue the feeling across Waterford yesterday was one of resignation.

    There was, however, also widespread acceptance of the IMF bailout and a confidence that with outside leadership we can, in time, move on. Tony Fitzgerald of Fitzgerald’s Menswear, Barronstrand Street, said that what had happened to the country’s economy was a bad thing but we would have to live with it.

    There would, he said, be less customers on the streets but it was worth remembering that if there was 15% unemployment in the country then 85% were working.

    Mr Fitzgerald said, "The same could be said this week but we will come back from it." He also quoted Padraig O’Griofa from Ballindud, whom he described as a great philosopher. During an oil crisis he said, "The Arabs have oil and sand and can eat neither of them. We are an agricultural country so no one need starve."

    The tough economic measures coming down the track would be difficult in the beginning and pensioners, in particular, would be worried about cuts. Some, predicted Michael Winkle, would suffer more than others but that should not be allowed to happen on the lower end of the financial scale.

    Breda Cummins, city retailer, believed intervention by the IMF was the only course of action that was available to us and there was not a lot we could do about it. She added, "I am disgusted with Fianna Fail and the Greens. Our problems started four or five years ago. However, I don’t have a lot of patience with people who entirely blame the government. Some people thoroughly rode the Celtic Tiger and they have to pay the price for it now."

    When it was suggested to him that the construction industry and estate agents contributed to the current crisis, he said that Waterford was a mirror image of what was happening across the country.

    "People did what they did and spent what they wanted to spend freely because they believed it was the right thing to do. We now know it was wrong to do that because the market overheated and the banks created a situation where people got the money they wanted and the Government never said stop."

    Mod Note::

    Okay OP, I don't mind you posting away about local issues but iv asked you before to stop posting just articles from papers and not actually commenting yourself or making any genuine contribution to the thread.

    If we wanted robots creating threads based on RSS news feeds or random stuff - we can do that, there are extensions available that do it for the board software!

    Closing the topic here and will issue a ban if you do it again. Last warning.
