Importing a classic from the UK

My dad is considering importing a classic range rover from the uk.

Anyone know what the process involves, especially regarding classics?
    Pitfalls?
Does the reg checks work on 30yr + plates?
    What forms should they have?

    Thanks,
    Seán.

(He currently has a 1978 Land Rover Series III)

Pitfalls are the same as buying a classic here - but with much less comeback once you get the car back to Ireland! You need to be doubly sure about the car before purchasing.

Get the full V5 off the vendor, and the only form you'll need back home is the one in the VRT office and your €50. (You should have evidence of the date of entry too - e.g. ferry receipts )

If you can get the reg and V5 ref number I think there's a site that allows you to check a car's MOT history for free. There was a couple of years ago anyway.

Not sure how well reg-checkers work with 30+ years. :)

just to mention its not the VRT office you go to, its the NCTS and you need to phone for an appointment within 7 days of import.Several other threads on here you should read.

I'm aware of the search facility alright, but I was hoping for info from someone who brought in a classic from the UK recently.

Besides, the import threads are massive now with dated and varied info so a thought the classic forum would be a good place to post this.

Thanks for the info Dades/Corktina, the reg checker and the process with NCTS was something I was wondering about.

    Hi Sean,
Here is a very usefull link
    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/vrt-guide.html

I would say make sure the vehicule is after 30 years old, and that you get a proof of importation and V5 and receipt from the seller.

    And it should be fine.

This is the link that might prove useful for you.

Scroll down to see what info you need and see the two types of free checks you can do. :)

Get the reg no and the "document reference number" from the V5C and off you go!
