Right, just had a call from my aunt saying my uncle seen a message pop up on screen about anti-virus pop on screen, and instead of clicking out of it, he hit something (see what i mean about vauge) and then she said a load of accounts (I'm presuming these were just windows popping up) but now when they turn on the laptop she says nothing is happening (I presume its at least posting cause she says she the DVD drive is lighting up)

Anyone have ANY clue what this could be, I'm really not in the fittest state to be working on anything (on very strong painkillers at the moment) so if anyone could even point me in the right direction it would make my life a hell of a lot easier.

    Thanks guys !

Oh and its running XP(SP3 I'm nearly sure)

It's unlikely that a virus will just brick a machine outright within seconds (if it did the botnet issue would solve itself). However, judging from the quality of tech report you're getting from your Aunt, I'mk going to guess this isn't the only time she's clicked on one of these things.

Without the laptop in front of me, it's hard to know what you could do. If your Aunt has the OS install disks you could ask her to boot from them and see if she can do a system restore to an earlier state. If that works, I'd restore the machine, take whatever data you need to save from the disk and then DBAN it and rebuild from scratch. Sorry, if that's not much help.

Good luck! Sounds like you'll need the painkillers!
