What class of gob****e ....seemed to be Michael Woods to be exact....brings the North Korean Ambassador into the Dáil while Brian Cowen is there for leaders questions and just before Brian Lenihan speaks on the emergency phone call to Europe on Sunday.

This on a day when the North Koreans were shelling the south. The Dail applauded too

An Ceann Comhairle, Séamus Kirk TD , Fianna Fáil

Before proceeding with business I wish on my own behalf and on behalf of the Members of Dáil Éireann to offer a cead mile fáilte, a most sincere welcome to His Excellency, Mr. Ja Song Nam, Ambassador to Ireland from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. I express the hope that you will enjoy your visit and that it will be successful and of mutual benefit.

As if we don't have enough shít on our hands. Who's idea was it to invite the representative of a hermit war-mongering mini-state. Mental.

    Shell the Dail?

I for one welcome, our new North Korean overlords.

So we should reject any approaches from any States we have not cut off relations with?
We should snub anyone you personally don't like? Forget about protocol and international treaties? Sure why not just welsh on the debt?

Is there gas reserves under there?

Or how about not inviting representatives of countries who recently shelled OTHER countries for no good reason, into our country which is currently enemy #1 to the rest of the world. I fail to see how this can benefit either country in any way.

So we should not invite Israeli or Us ambassadors into Leinster house?
And if the US months in advance arranges to visit and the US or Israel happens to shell say North Korea or Iraq or Palestine or someone on the day the Ambassador arrives we should blank him?

And whom do you suggest has the authority to do this?

the taoiseach. Minister of foreign affairs or chair of Foreign affair committee?

It takes two to tango. It wouldnt surprise me if these shells were a false flag job to spark off tensions.

Apparently he was brought in because he was so ronely.

Brian Cowen probably thought he was the delivery man from the local Chinese takeaway.

I don't see what the problem is and I live in Seoul.

Are you suggesting we should not welcome North Korean diplomats ?

On a side note, I wonder will he have a laugh at the economy and offer us a loan. :pac:

This reminds me of Dev signing the book of condolences after Hitler's death. Ireland sure has a knack for putting its foot in it. Who's our visitor of the week next time? Ahmadinejad?

are Ireland just opening diplomatic relations with them or what? there is no embassy or consulate here for DPRK, and a google search of him just shows up this thread.

maybe the government need to look for ideas on how to move from currency to food stamps??

There is a time and place for everything and yesterday was not the time to welcome the North Korean ambassador, sandwiched as he was between the Taoiseach and the Minister of Finance. Christ knows who was watching :(

He should have been brought in around the second stage of the Dog Breeding bill if anything.

The fact that every Dail member stood up and clapped him is a depressing sign!

No doubt we should make them sit out for the same length of period that Sinn Fein had to. All the previous policies of preventing any public discussion by Sinn Fein didn't have any effect it was not until they were engaged by the SDLP's Hume, and then the Irish and British governments that finally some progress was made.

The shelling only happened yesterday, the North Korean ambassador would have already been scheduled for visiting the Dail way in advance of the shelling incident and may well have already travelled from London to Dublin. So do you insult him and the North Korean government by cancelling the visit when he journeyed to Dublin?

No, the Ambassador covers both Ireland and the UK.

I wonder how his report back to Pyongyang would have looked...
    Dear Leader,

It is with great humbleness that I make this report upon my visit to the Republic of Ireland, known as The Korea of Europe.

We share many similarities with this country. A split country with dreams of re-unification, it has almost no economy worthy of the name and is dependant on foreign aid to survive. The People seem to have an unquestioned devotion to The Party, and always vote them back into office. They are so isolated that their own government didn't seem to know about today's artillery exchange with our misguided Brothers to our South, during my visit to their legislative chambers I was treated to applause and no mention was made either in support of, or against our position. Given our commonalities, I would have expected statements of support, but ignorance can be excused. We shall educate them later.

There are some differences, however. Their weather is a little better, but they have no subway system like we do. Their military is barely a percent of our own, they will not make good allies in that respect. However, famine is unlikely, as they have an abundance of grass. Maybe an export agreement could be entered into.

I shall keep an eye on this nation for further review.

    Your loyal servant, etc etc

    NTM

We half-sorted the relationship with our northern friends. No harm in the visit if he picked up a few tips on establishing friendly relations.
