Went out with the camera around Galway on Sunday evening. Couple of shots that here, mostly of the Cathedral. Maybe some interest to some on here.

Shot 4 is my favourite. Lit churches at night make very good subjects.

Very nice. Really like 1,2 and 4.
Although it would have been nice to capture the entire reflection in 2.

Apart from that, I'm not jealous at all! :D

Is your lens dirty? The lights seem to be flaring a hell of a lot.

Aaaah, so thats the reason. I was wondering what the problem was and why that was happening, I even asked that question in another thread here. I was using the kit lens, 18-55mm, will have to give it a good cleaning and try some more. Thanks for that.

Well, it might just be the quality of the optics on the kit lens, but I would not be surprised if there was a slight fingerprint smear or something like that on the front. I like the shots by the way, I point out the lights because they're disrupting some otherwise very nice shots.

Did you have a UV filter attached to the lens when shooting these? Filters can aggravate the flaring.

    Nice night shots :)

You would get far better 'starry' lights using a prime, like a humble 50mm f/1.8 - the glass is just so much better and much less likely to give you such flaring.

aaa coool!! must try that here in limerick soon! with all the Christmas lights and stuff!! great shots can be got from the living bridge in UL at night.. It was that which inspired me to take the plunge and really get into photography!

    Cheers for the great shots!!

Very nice shots !, nice and sharp and no noise !!!

Actually , how did you get that cathedral (#1) so sharp ??

if i do shots with long exps , I usually don't get such sharpness, maybe it's my wavery tripod...

Haven't the first clue about photography...
All this Jargon i'm hearing, Noise????
    lol
But i can still notice a good shot and wow hem pictures are brilliant loving pics 4 and 5 especially!! Really nice pictures, keep them coming!!!

Noise is basically the 'speckles' you get [more noticeable in darker areas of an image] when you use Higher ISO [light sensitivity] settings, or often found in long exposures. You can also get terrible light pollution from not covering the VF during the exposure, light flare [unwanted streaks of nasty light] and hot pixels [during much longer exposures]

In this case while the images are nice and clean with very little or no noise obvious, I wouldn't like the light glaring. Some might, but it's too distracting for my liking. Better glass would solve this, but well done with what you achieved with a kit lens.
