Is there something missing from this pic of a house side access

As in,is there meant to be some sort of felt or membrane in between the PVC cladding and the plywood board.

Could I use a layer of thermawrap foil roll to keep out the cold and keep the plywood intact from the elements?

Or is it ok like that?

    Thanks.:)

So that is acceptable then and also normal??

Just that myself and my girlfriend were wondering if there should have been something in between.

The plywood was recently treated to a a 2 layer coat of Larsens green wood preservitive (jesus its strong stuff) on the outside and the inside too.Dont like the idea of the stuff rotting away and falling down,so hense the Larsens preservitive.

Also should we get the inside insulated.

A mate of mine told me to use Rockwool insulated and accoustic slabs,to line and insulate on the inside,as above that overhang is a bedroom

Would some sort of vapour barrier material stapled to the plywood be any good??

And then the PVC cladding boards put back on.

    Thanks.:)

All good. Not knowing what's above the plywood - ie, is there a room above it or what - can't comment on insulation.
Ply is being used as a form of grounds (support) for lights/PVC by the looks of it??

Bedroom above the over hang (see post 3 ;))

Theres no insulation in there at all, well apart from a pi55y little bit at the end,but just what you see below and then the floor boards above in the bedroom.

I got that Rockwool 100mm insulation slab stuff the other day,on the reccomendation of my friend.

Do I need to use some sort of vapour barier aswell, and would it go on the outside or the inside of the overhang??

    Thanks.:)

    Ah.Little less good, maybe.

What are the floor boards sitting on?

    So you literally have

    plywood
    support for floorboards
    floorboards.

Putting something above the ply might be an idea so. And possibly a vapour barrier too. Just one thing (I'm not an electrician)...will those lights that I see protrude up through the plywood? Ensure they are protruding into insulation, as they will become a serious fire hazard.

My missus bought a roll of that Thermawrap stuff in Woodies today,as she thought it would be of some use to us.

But yes,its basicly pvc cladding, plywood sheet, then the main floor joists and an rsj beam, and then plywood flooring above in the bedroom.thats it and thats all.

But I am going to pack it out with that Rockwool slab stuff that I got,to try and keep out the cold and the noise too.

So where would be best to put a vapour barrier sheet then?

    Do we ......

1-Staple it to the outside of the plywood, put back on the pvc cladding?

2-Staple and seal it down on the inside of the plywod overhang, from inside the house?

3-Put it down ontop of the main floor of the bedroom and then put down underlay and carpet?

Honestly, I'm not sure. Instinct tells me maybe option 2, but other people might have better advise on that.

By the way, I should have said that the lights will NOT protrude into the insulation, especially if you're doing the work yourself.Just be very careful, I know someone who's house burned down coz of that!!!

Right, can anyone please tell me what type of membrane or roof felt material to get.And whether to install it on the outside (in between the PVC cladding and the plywood) or on the inside, (inside the house under the floor boards).

I need to get this problem sorted now asap.

    Thanks.:)

Just re-clad the outside with the PVC. If you are really concerned about a membrane, then put one down inside the roof. Don't put it between the PVC and ply, as if water does get in, it'll retain it and rot the timber.

Its really just a soffit with cladding underneath, like a standard roof. I'd just insulate between the joists and be done with it. Maybe get sealed IP rated downlighters for the outside, but that's it really.

    Thanks for the advice.

I just got rid of the downlighters completely, and have plugged the holes with new plywood pieces that I cut out with a hole saw,as I didnt like them and the fact that theres cold air comming in to the box room above, doesnt appeal to me.:(

Just have 1 normal energy efficent outdoor pollycarbonate bulkhead now with a 15W CFL bulb in it.

I also just got a roll of Daltex Roof Ultra membrane and 2 bales of Rookwool insulated/accoustic slab. All will be applied to the inside,as you say yourself.;)

And my girlfriend also got a large roll of that ThermaWrap insulated foil roll, and I will but that down and then put the floor boards back down in the box room.

So hopefully, that should do the job
