Changing car- insurance query

    Hi all,

I'm thinking of changing cars (for the winter). Driving an mx5 at the moment so worried about the winter we're about to have with rwd and all. Don't want to write it off over a stupd skid.

My friend has a mazda 323 that i could use for the winter. I have fully comp with a broker at the moment.

I remember calling my insurance company about this earlier in the year and explained what i wanted to do and why. They refused to cover me even though the mx5 would have been off the road but still in my name. I'm not sure why they refused but it was something to do with owning both cars at the same time etc. A bit ridiculous tbh since i was trying to lower the risks for them.

I'm now thinking of basically calling my insurance company and tell them i'm changing cars. Don't know whether to mention the mx5 is been repaired or something. It does need a timing belt doing soon so not really lying;)

However, Would i need to be the owner of the 323 in order to insure it or would i still be fully covered?

My tax on the mx5 is up the end of this month so it's kind of rushed so i don't have to renew it for another 3 months.

Does this all sound ok because i am just changing cars even if it is only for a quarter of the year.

Btw, the mx5 would be in storage in garage so no real risk of theft (i hope)

    Thanks for advice!

Why not get a set of winter tyres & rims for the MX-5? And why am I getting a sense of déja vu?;)

Hehe I remember you replied to my original thread. It was too old to find so thought i'd just start a new one.

Thought the 323 would just be better for winter really. Kinda freezing with the softtop. Also, more or less free car so wouldn't cost much.

Would winter tyres make a big difference on ice for the mx5? What ones do you suggest? Tempted to just throw a few sandbags in the boot and hope for the best. Would be driving to donegal around christmas though which i managed ok last year in fwd.

Another problem with transferring insurance to the 323, is would that leave the MX totally uninsured? You'd have to keep it parked off road (resist temptation) and what would happen in event of fire, theft or damage?

Nope, should be ok. It would be garaged with alarm etc. Anyway, i'm still undecided. Might just go for winter tyres. Will be cheap christmas pressies for everyone this year though:D Might try find a safe open space and practice have a bit of fun when the ice comes in any case.

Only studded tyres/chains make any difference on ice.

You may start easier on ice with winters, but stopping is more important and they won't make much difference.
