Having trouble backing up the iPhone, I'm trying to update the software and I keep getting a can't back up to computer error, I've searched the web and can't find an answer to this.

    Anyone any ideas??

Yeah, tried that, still getting the same error, tried to back it under a different user on my laptop, still getting the error.

What happens if I restore the phone? I don't even know what it hasn't backed up cos as far as I can see everything is on the laptop?!?

Texts and emails will be gone. It usually does a quick backup every sync anyway
Make sure contacts and pics etc are set to sync aswell

If you want to make sure everything you need is backed up you can use (if jailbroken) SSH to manually backup whatever you want. Contacts, SMS, Call history, Notes, Calendar, App Data, Settings, Camera Roll etc etc can all be backed up this way. I backup all my data this way when restoring
