I see canon are releasing some new glass...

    http://www.dpreview.com/news/1011/10110105canonlensshippingdelay.asp

This news story is about the delay of the release, but interesting

The EF 8-15 f4L USM (fisheye zoom)- wow that will be amazing on full frame.
    (hope it's not to expensive)

Interesting that they are releasing an L version of the 70-300 IS f4-5.6.

The 300mm & 400mm f2.8 IS L II will cost the GDP of a small nation - but one can dream :) ...

fisheye is expected to be approx 1200 (I think)

considering getting it - but would prob never use it.....fisheye lenses are fairly limited..... this fisheye gives 180degree view (I think)

The 300 and 400mm lenses are delayed until March 2011. Unfortunately. :(

But, when in stock, I'll be getting the 400mm lens.

just goes to show the "mark-up" made by Irish companies

according to Canon it "should" retail at $1400 - which is approx €1200.

    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/about_canon?pageKeyCode=pressreldetail&docId=0901e024801e8289

I'll probably test it - dunno if I'll purchase or not.

Well, the US price for the 400mm is $11,000. You can pre-order at that price in some US stores.

    I've seen pre-order UK prices of £11,600.

US price in Euro - €8,229
UK price in Euro - €13,700

That's almost €5,500 difference in price.

I haven't been able to get an Irish price from anyone yet. Waiting on prices from Gunns and ISS.

That US price won't have any sales tax/VAT applied though, you're going to have to add 21.5% 22.5% 23% to that to have a comparable price, depending on when it becomes available.

    Still a mad difference though.

for that kind of price difference I'd fly over - pay relevant taxes, have a holiday.... travel home .... pay import duty etc.... and still save money.

(if I was buying it) ... price online will prob be cheaper.

Why would a hobbyist pay almost €10K for a lens?

Because they want to. There are hobbies that can easily cost a lot more than 10,000 Euro.

I'm not just a hobby photographer. I do a good bit of paid sports photography work.

Aside from that, the answer would be - because I can afford it, and I want to. :D
