Apple giving the finger to 3G and 3GS users.

In fairness I've used the Find My iPhone app to locate 3G and 3GS phones and its fairly hit and miss, the reception in the iP4 is much better and normally locates within seconds.

I can see why they opted to leave older users in the dark as there would be a lot of complaints if it didn't work correctly.

well i have the 3gs and i pretty much expected my phone to be forgotten about once the iphone 4 was released, its around 2 years old, and i was well aware i would have to upgrade this June!

ill be waiting on the 4gs! :D

3g's hardware just cannot cope with the newest software which is to be expected from an old product!

That doesn't make any sense. If Apple were really concerned about the feature not working properly on 3G and 3GS handsets, they would withdraw it from those devices altogether. They haven't. 3G and 3GS users just have to pay a MobileMe subscription to get it. What is going to get more complaints - a free service or a paid service?

There were good reasons for the 3G not getting some of the newer features of iOS 4, but there's no reason for Apple to do this except to make the iPhone 4 look better by deliberately screwing 3G and 3GS users. If you lose your iPhone 3G or 3GS, Apple would prefer that it stay lost, encouraging you to buy a new iPhone 4.

To say they are screwing 3GS users is a bit dramatic, they are just giving a free feature to iPhone 4 people. It is a bonus feature to drive sales, the 4 makes them a lot more money than the 3GS. I could see your point if it was previously free and they started charging for 3G/3GS tracking from today.

how do ya come to that conclusion, both were the same price at release

How can you NOT come to that conclusion? Theyre hardly selling more iPhone 3GS 8gb than iPhone 4 16 & 32GB.
So its quite clear the 4 is making them more money than the 3GS.

Just because people are reselling their 3GS to 3rd parties doesnt mean apple make more money (Apart from App Downloads but that is trivial compared to the money to be made from the actual sale of the phone)

I mean right now they are making a lot more money off the 4 than the 3GS, it costs more now so it makes sense to make it more desirable. It also drives upgrades from the 3G and 3GS.

And I could see your point if the Find My Phone feature was new, but it's not. It's an existing feature which many iPhone users are paying to have. Apple have now decided to give it free to iPhone 4 users AND 4th gen iPod Touch (which costs half the price of a 3GS) users, but not to 3GS users. It's not like the 3GS is ancient hardware either. Apple are still selling them.

    From: http://www.apple.com/iphone/find-my-iphone-setup/
Create a free Find My iPhone account on any iPhone 4, iPad, or iPod touch (4th generation) running iOS 4.2. Once you create an account on a qualifying device, use your Apple ID and password to enable Find My iPhone on your other devices running iOS 4.2. Find My iPhone is not available in all countries.

This would seem to imply that if you create an account on a qualifying device (e.g. someone else's iPhone 4), then you can then use that same account on an older model.

It just seems like begrudgery, 3GS users are not worse off today than they were yesterday.

It's still not there at 4 p.m. but after I clicked the 'Check for Update' button the date for the next check has been set to tomorrow (23rd), it's normally set to seven days out after you do a manual check.

read my post, also who said anything about the 8GB 3GS, which wasnt available at the release of the 3GS

Nice one. :D I just tried this. Set it up from my iPad as instructed, then logged in on my iPhone 3GS. It worked. I'm currently tracking my iPhone using the Find My Phone app on my iPad. :D

You said the iPhone 4 isnt making them more than the 3GS.
I'm saying it is because the current sales of the iphone 4 are higher than the iphone 3GS. What does last years sales figures/profits have anything to do with new features being added.
Its common practice for companies to support their newer products to promote people into buying them.
What Apple is doing is perfectly acceptable sales tactics.

I see your point but I think Apple need to be smarter with their marketing tactics this time round, especially with mobile devices. They still supported their PPC machines up until last year, I have an 8 year old Mac running 10.5 which is crazy when you compare the hardware requirements for Windows.

The iPhone 4 is drastically different to the 3GS so they more people that adopt these devices, this will mean a better experience for the end user.

my point was the 3gs at release cost 599 for the 16gb
iphone 4 at release cost 599 for the 16gb, see what i'm getting at now

What would this have ANYTHING to do with adding a free feature to the iPhone 4?
its just standard marketing practice. Would ye be complaining if the iPhone 4 had the find me feature from day one?

If you have the greenpoison jailbreak installed can you simply update to 4.2 through iTunes since it's a bootrom exploit, and still be jailbroken?

me.com lets you do it online if you've subscribed to MobileMe, so I assume it'll let you do it (minus the other stuff) if you've registered for the free version as well.

anyone having a problem with the 4.2 download?
the file is downloading fine and then extracts but when it goes to "verifying with apple" its giving me an error saying "the iphone software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable"....

if it matters,i jailbroke the phone this morning, iphone 4 running 4.1 and i used limera1n...anyone?or is it just simply congested?

it's all a bit meh for the iphone, not much of note added. good to have find your phone for free though I guess.

Anyone lose all their ipod songs/videos on their iPhone 4 after the update? I did. Apparently its a known bug.

    To solve:

    Plug iPhone into iTunes.
The content should be listed under 'XX's iPhone'
Click on any of the songs listed there, play it, then sync

and.... hurrah they will have reappeared on your iPhone!

Yeah that happened me alright, just did a resync and all my songs and videos were back, no big deal. :)

Anyone else having an issue with Navigon? On the drive into work this morning the screen would dim every minute and instantly the brightness would come back to normal. Work around is to have the Auto-Lock set to never. But that's not ideal.

Just tried it with a couple of other apps and no issue...

    Thanks for that!

After (finally) updating my iPhone said I had "no content" - only that I read your post earlier I wouldn't have started manually adding everything all over again...

Doing a sync made everything appear as before. :)

It's all installed and working fine for me, nothing funny happened.

The new text tones are brutal, gave them a shot there. I don't know who Apple thinks wants a 5-10 second alarm every time a text pops in.

Happy with the free Find my iPhone feature, it's the only thing I would have wanted in the MobileMe subscription, just in case the phone goes AWOL...

Like 99.99% of people I don't have an Apple TV or Airprint printer so can't test those features.

So it's really a fairly non-event upgrade from 4.1 (on an iPhone 4 at least).
