The Green Party is expected to make an announcement on its future in government this morning.

The Green parliamentary party is meeting around now to discuss the fallout from last night's decision of the Cabinet to seek emergency funding from the IMF.

There is speculation the party may announce plans to exit government after the Budget.

I've heard on other forums that it's expected at 11.30.

It's probably just to say we have been away on holidays for the last week, but, having read this morning's papers we are fully behind the EU/IMF intervention

    Too little, way too late.

They facilitated the criminals of FF, they drove the getaway car.

They have as much to answer for as their FF masters.

Disgusting if true. They need to step down today. Let the government fall and let's get an election next week.

I completely agree that this government needs to be gone asap but it takes far far longer to stage a democratic election than that here. I'd suggest the earliest we'd actually get to the polls would be mid February.

It could be done in about 3 weeks.

Serious question - now that we no longer have to rely on the views of the bond markets for the forseeable future, is there any harm at all in holding an election now and delaying the budget until after Christmas?

The Greens will never get another seat in this country. If you lie down with dogs...

"serious announcement" is how its being described.

I presume this statement will express with a sigh, disappointment with the pretty pass Ireland has arrived at (code for anger with FF handling of the banking collapse), say that the IMF/EU deal is on balance the right thing for Ireland and that dispite a heavy heart will remain in coalition with FF as "the last thing the state needs is a snap election"

I'm assuming RTE will not manage to cover this live....

FF is most to blame surely. They have been in power for 13 years. They have huge political, economic, finacial power and simply made a right mess of things.

The other political parties are far from perfect but I doubt we would have ended up requiring major IMF / EU with them and effectively loosing economic soverignity.

If the announcement is made after 12.00 pm RTE will miss it cos Ronan will be spinning disks. Tune to Newstalk 106-108

They have always been a party with a minority vote (urban, middle class, obsessed about minority issues), so any removal from government now still won't stop the inevitable wipeout at the election.

One seat held at most I think - and that could well be the (more) likeable Trevor Sargent in Dublin North.

Makes me wonder if they are actually naive enough not to realise this wipeout is on the horizon!

Well they're getting a huge amount of attention this morning, let's hope this statement is significant.

I cant see the FF backbenchers allowing the credit go to the GP for collapsing the government. I would expect a backbench revolt within days and a collapse of the government prior to the budget if the GP announcement is what we expect.

Greens call for New Year election

    22 November 2010

Statement by Green Party Leader John Gormley

The past week has been a traumatic one for the Irish electorate. People feel misled and betrayed.

The Green Party believes three things must be done in the coming two months to safeguard the future prosperity and independence of the Irish people.

    These are:

    * Producing a credible four-year plan to show we can make our Budgets balance by 2014.
    * Delivering a Budget for 2011.
    * Securing funding support from the EU and IMF which will respect vital Irish interests and restore stability to the Euro area.

We have always said that our involvement in government would only continue as long as it was for the benefit of the Irish people. Leaving the country without a government while these matters are unresolved would be very damaging and would breach our duty of care.

But we have now reached a point where the Irish people need political certainty to take them beyond the coming two months. So, we believe it is time to fix a date for a general election in the second half of January 2011.

We made our decision last Saturday after a long series of meetings.

Since entering government in June 2007, we in the Green Party have worked to fix and reform the economy. It has been difficult. We have taken tough decisions and put the national interest first.

We cannot go back and reverse the property bubble and the reckless banking which we consistently spoke opposed. Nor can we control the market turmoil which has afflicted the Euro area.

We have taken extensive measures to recognise the losses and stabilise our banking system. However, it is now clear we need further measures to give market confidence about our banks and public finances.

We are now discussing ways of restoring stability to the banking system with the support of our European colleagues and the IMF. We have to ensure that the terms of any such support are in the interests of the Irish people and the wider Euro area. The timeframe for achieving a four-year plan, Budget 2011 and a good outcome from IMF/EU talks is very short. These matters must at this stage take priority ahead of everything else.

Despite our difficulties and disappointments, I believe we can get out of this situation. We must all work together to ensure the best outcome for everyone.

    [ENDS]

    Information:
    Damian Connon 087 228 1119
    John Downing 087 237 4769
    Nicola Cassidy 087 914 8175

Long overdue but there you have it.

Can someone explain why Ireland must be rushed into a budget (decided by the people who wrecked the country) and 4yr plan?

Why can't the people be allowed give a mandate to FG/Labour which within a few short weeks would present their own budget and 4yr plan which will at least have a mandate from the people?
We all know we're in for a tough decade at least.

Surely a new government will just pass their own budget in February, rendering this December budget completely pointless. Same with the 4 year plan - it's just going to be completely re-written. Call an election immediately.

Hilarious! Gormley informed Cowen of this earlier today but he didn't tell Lenny, who has been quoted as saying the Greens were fully on board.

The greens will be wiped from the face of the political map in this country.

What of a meaningless by-election in Donegal now?

Cowen will resign / be booted out, hanafin to lead FF into an election in

January where FF will receive 15 percent of the vote.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 7,486 ✭✭✭Red Alert

I still will give them no thanks for it. They should have pulled the plug a long time ago, and this attempt to support their version of democracy is a cynical electoral tactic. The green party's office furniture and electoral posters will hopefully be the first load into the Poolbeg incinerator.
