Maybe this stuff is happening all the time and is never reported in the media. With the Qantas incident the media are now hungry for such incidents and it's now a media frenzy imo.

Like bananas and buses, sometimes these things happen in bunches. The Qantas incident is completely unrelated and in all probability the three Delta incidents may be unrelated too.

It is just a bit of a media frenzy thanks to the A380 thing. 'Routine' engine problems happen all the time. Keeps the maintenance shops busy.

Dont worry, theres a bigger chance youll be killed on the drive to the airport :D sorry!

As said above the media love getting their hands on this stuff and are quite ignorant about a lot of aviation safety issues. Ryanair had a tailstrike last year in Dublin Airport and the media went absolutely mental, and of course these boards and after hours got very busy with people suggesting the usual crap "ryanair use baggage handlers for pilots" etc., when tailstrikes happen probably every day.

Im bringing my own mechanic up to give the plane a once over before I go anywhere with Delta on Friday. He probably wont get DAA approval so he can jump over the fence. These stories always come out a week before I fly, hard not to think that one day im going to end up on one. Incidently this is my first time flying with Delta, has anyone here ever flown with them and what did they think?

Flew with them to JFK and back in 2006. I found them excellent, comfortable in economy class (B767) and they didnt seem to stop feeding us! The captain told us we had started out descent and would be in JFK in approx 30 minutes, and that the cabin crew would be serving a light snack prior to landing. The light snack was pizza and chips :D

Good stuff:D. We'll be on a B757 I believe, bit of a bummer I would have liked to travel on the B767.
