Speed limit on Callan road

I am sure that this is something that has been discussed before, that the speed limit between kilkenny and cuffesgrange on the Callan road is absolutely crazy. Just like the majority of people using that road, I have never really adhered to the 60 km/hr limit. But now that it is being targeted with speed cameras, with signs up and everything, I have been obeying this ridiculous limit, which has now been reduced to 50 km/hr. I just can't afford the fine, and would rather not have points on my licence. But yesterday, as I was snailing along that stretch of road, I had a car pull right up on top of me, and switch their hazards on. I was so embarrassed! I am not a hazard on the road. That speed limit is a hazard! And they say that they're not trying to make money from it, it's a perfect spot to rake in the cash.

well considering I lost a very good friend of mine on that stretch of road a few years ago .. I would have to disagree with you

I'm really sorry to hear that. I do understand that it is a dangerous stretch of road, and I would never drive at 100 km/hr, but surely there must be a happy medium. Driving THAT slowly is also likely to cause accidents, hence I was labelled a hazard.

This story reminds me of a female friend who once refused to wear her seatbelt in a Fiat Cinquecento (the belts are red) on the basis that it clashed with her dress.:)

Seriously though, embarrassment is a very poor excuse for speeding.

I actually drove along that stretch of road an hour ago. New Surface, wide road etc and I agree its difficult to stick to the 60kmh (soon to be 50kmh by the looks of the half covered new signs) but it is a built up area with lots of exits and distractions. I do a lot of miles and encounter a lot of unreasonable speed limits (theres one just a few miles south of the area -80kmh on a cul de sac) but I have to agree with this one.

If you follow that argument to it's logical conclusion what you're saying is that idiotic tailgating boy racers should be allowed to decide the speed limits.
