Just wondering if there's any thought to a group buy before Christmas?

The last one was a bit of an epic so it might be worth getting the ball rolling...

apologies for being a noob- what exactly is "group buy"?

Count me in though I wouldn't be best suited to run it geographically.

Yeah, I'm actually being a bit selfish because I'd love to be a part of this again, but with the arrival of baby number 4 in our house life is a bit mad right now so I can't pull it all together either. Happy to help though.

I just wanted to kick off the idea to see if anything happened.

A bunch of forum users buy a bunch of quality coffee from a roaster somewhere in the world that you normally wouldn't order from because of shipping costs, etc. A group buy just makes it a bit cheaper. And fun to try out some great coffees!

You can work your way through the last group buy here:

Count me in if it goes ahead. Sorry but not in a position to organise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

When we kicked these off the scope was very different to what it has now become. As such I think a rethink of how these are managed would be prudent (if agreed by consensus).

The time and money involved for the organiser are now quite substantial.

I would suggest stricter timelines and dealines for participation and for submitting your choices coupled with paying up front on said deadline.

If someone is happy to organise without these restrictions - fine, but I'm not happy in good conscience having one person doing so much, and I think I would sit out any future orders.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 127 ✭✭Regular Latte

Reactor, I think you make a good point there. Some sort of outline of how best to run a group buy would be very helpful.

I had wondered if it might be the case that every now and then a user comes on to say, for example, they are going to order from XYZ roaster next Friday and wanted to see if others wanted to join the order. That way the roaster and date are fixed before it gets started.

    Just a thought...

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,440 Mod ✭✭✭✭Mr Magnolia

Sounds very fair. We could limit the orders until Friday or a set € limit, whichever comes first. We'd need a roastery and more importantly someone to pull it together.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

anyone any ideas on where to order from?

I enjoyed Gimme!, but I thought Terroir Ndiara was to die for! I'd love to go Terroir again!!

I do agree with RE*AC*TOR's point, though: that was a huge job for Doodee the last time (Kudos to Doodee!).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 762 ✭✭✭SeaSide

Given the size of the order much of the work could be taken on by the supplier with just the distribution being undertaken locally.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,272 ✭✭✭donnacha

I'll do the organising this time, but work will be crazy from 2nd week of Dec on so need to have it all delivered and distributed by mid Dec. Perhaps we can agree that last orders need to be submitted by this day week?

Anyway onto the more important stuff - any preference for roasters? :D

I'd recently tried to buy from Tim Wendleboe but they declined my order on the basis that they won't ship to Ireland ... still dying to try some of their stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

I'm sure the Messrs Wendelboe and Varney could be convinced easily.

Other options that would require persuasion would be Counter Culture or Ritual. Neither officially ship out of US, but might be persuaded.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 88 ✭✭arabica69

I would second REACTOR's Wendleboe suggestion. They are a little pricey, but do an amazing job.

And if we're going down, I'd prefer to go down in style... this time next year group buys may be from Aldi or Lidl

Count me in if it goes ahead. The Intelligentsia coffee last time around was outstanding, really delicious - so full credit to Doodee for his outstanding effort. What would you have done differently Doodee?

donnacha, if you're willing to organise and you fancy TW then that sounds like a plan.

Maybe Reactor could confirm if they will ship here??

    Deadline for orders 30th November?

    What do others think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,272 ✭✭✭donnacha

Reactor - I dropped you an email re: contacting the Tim's.

For those interested you can find the Wendleboe webshop here

    Approx exchange rates:
    1 EUR: 8.13 NOK
    1 NOK: 0.12 EUR

I'm drooling already at the thoughts of that Honduras COE ...

It wasn't all me who did it. Had a big hand from PPC.
If I was to do it again I would give people a week to decide what they want and then freeze the order.
The other thing would be enforcing payments, either before or on the day. It's gets rather confusion with half a dozen of one etc.
I would also have people HAVE to confirm their order somehow. This is more so to safeguard the buyer from buying extra by accident :o

    Ok gentlemen.

Tim has happily agreed to be provider.

Not only that but he is kindly offering us wholesale prices which are considerably less than retail prices.

Shipping will be by Norwegian Post, which will generally take a week. Hopefully if possible shipped on a Monday maybe reaching us by the Friday (this would need to be arranged with Tim).

The Cielito Lindo on the site, according to Tim is just finished now, so I hope no one had their heart set on that one. Otherwise there is the new X-mas espresso offering which isn't on the site yet.

Prices € per kg (offered in 250g or 1kg sizes)
    TW espresso: 22,-
    TW X-mas espresso: 23,-
    Hunkute: 19,-
    Tekangu: 27,-
    Mugaga: 25,-
    Naciemento: 20,-

Some of you may know that I used Tim's coffee for the Irish Barista Championships this year. I did so because I hold their coffee in the highest esteem. They not only source stunning coffees, but their roast style is (for my palate at least) on the money.

I will pass on the full details to Donnacha from here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 271 ✭✭Clinker

    Thanks for that, RE*AC*TOR!

Are only the Espresso blends intended for espresso use, or would the others work? I like to have coffee for both espresso and filter in stock, so I'm hoping to strike a balance here!

Do we have any idea of what the postage costs will be? I had a look on the Norwegian Post Office website but can't seem to find any postage calculator.

    I'll probably take
250g of everything, and 500g of the Xmas Espresso
Thanks for organising, and let me know about depositing cash.
    K

Tim roasts Tues, Weds & Thurs so I'd like to get the order in at the start of next week so it hits the postal system earlier in the week. I'm going to close the ordering on this 1st thing Monday so I can place the order Monday afternoon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,464 ✭✭✭snollup

What about payment, paypal or bank transfer? What's easiest for you Donnacha?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,272 ✭✭✭donnacha

I'll see what the totals look like for the cost before I decide - but I'd say cash for those in Dublin that are meeting.

For anyone not in Dublin then I'll look for a Bank Payment. Karl in CoffeeAngel has been very kind to offer next day delivery for those of ye outside Dublin @€;6.

I can meet any day/evening in Dub with cash, or whatever else suits best.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,396 ✭✭✭PPC

Can i put in a separate order for a group in work please?

    Hunkute .50
    Tekangu .50
    Mugaga .25
    Naciemento .25

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭stimpson

    I'll take 250g of all 6 please.

Thanks to the organisers and to PPC for mentioning it to me this morning!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,272 ✭✭✭donnacha

Okay - I'm closing this out now and getting the order in. Once I have postage costs I'll update the xls. For anyone that can't meet in Dublin late next week can you let me know and I'll PM you my bank details.
